Kindertransport Memorial — Attraction in Gdansk

The Kindertransport Monument (Pomnik Kindertransportów) in Gdańsk is a poignant tribute to the Jewish children evacuated from the Free City of Danzig (now Gdańsk) to the United Kingdom just before the outbreak of World War II. Located in the city center, near the Gdańsk Główny railway station, the monument commemorates the rescue efforts that saved many young lives from the impending horrors of the Holocaust.​

🕊️ Historical Background Between May 3 and August 25, 1939, four organized transports carried approximately 130 Jewish children from Gdańsk to the UK. These evacuations were part of the broader Kindertransport initiative, which aimed to relocate Jewish children from Nazi-occupied territories to safety. Tragically, many of these children's families remained behind and perished during the Holocaust. ​

🎨 The Monument Unveiled on May 6, 2009, the monument was created by Frank Meisler, a sculptor born in Gdańsk and himself a survivor of the last Kindertransport from the city on August 25, 1939. The bronze sculpture depicts a group of children with suitcases, standing on railway tracks, symbolizing their journey into the unknown. The figures are mounted on a granite and concrete base, with the tallest statue reaching 170 cm. ​

🔧 Restoration and Return In September 2019, the monument was temporarily removed to protect it during the renovation of the Gdańsk Główny railway station. After nearly four years, it was ceremoniously reinstalled on June 12, 2023. The reinstallation event was attended by city officials, including Gdańsk's mayor, and representatives from Jewish organizations, highlighting the monument's significance in preserving the memory of those rescued...

Pomnik Kindertransportów odsłonięty w 2009 roku upamiętnia dzieci żydowskie wywiezione z Gdańska do Londynu tuż przed wybuchem II wojny światowej.

Dzięki 4 transportom uratowano życie 130 żydowskim dzieciom.

Pomnik przedstawia pięcioro dzieci w różnym wieku - 3 chłopców i 2 dziewczynki . Dzieci oczekują na peronie na przyjazd pociągu.

Pomnik jest dziełem izraelskiego rzeźbiarza, który był jednym z ocalałych dzieci wywiezionych z Gdańska.

W 2919 roku pomnik został zdemontowany w związku z generalnym remontem Dworca Głównego  PKP w Gdańsku.

Pomnik upamiętnia akcję ewakuacji żydowskich dzieci z Wolnego Miasta Gdańska do Wielkiej Brytanii (Kindertransport) w okresie od 3 maja do 25 sierpnia 1939 r. Autorem pomnika jest Frank Meisler, urodzony w Gdańsku, który sam był uratowany dzięki Kindertransportom w 1939 roku.

Pomnik jest jednym z pięciu pomników tego typu w Europie projektu Meislera. Inne znajdują się m.in. w Londynie, Berlinie, Rotterdamie i Hamburgu.

W 2019 roku pomnik został czasowo usunięty (zdemontowany) w związku z modernizacją otoczenia dworca PKP. W czerwcu 2023 roku pomnik powrócił na swoje pierwotne miejsce przed...
