Jan Heweliusz Monument – Gdańsk This monument honours Jan Heweliusz (Johannes Hevelius), a renowned 17th-century astronomer, mathematician, and inventor from Gdańsk. It was unveiled on January 28th, 2006, on the 395th anniversary of his birth. You’ll find it in a peaceful square on Korzenna Street, just opposite the Old Town Hall. The statue, created by sculptor Jan Szczypka, shows Heweliusz seated with a book on his knee and an astrolabe in his hand – a nod to his scientific achievements. His figure is dressed in historical clothing, inspired by an old engraving by Jeremiasz Falck. The monument is part of the cultural trail "In the Footsteps of Jan Heweliusz," which takes visitors through key sites in Gdańsk connected to his life and work. It’s a quiet, atmospheric spot to reflect on the city’s rich scientific heritage.

We were wandering around Old Town and suddenly there he was—seated with that big metal globe behind him, looking like he was mid-thought. The setting is super peaceful with trees and the little canal nearby. It felt more like a quiet tribute than something showy, which I actually loved. We had the whole area to ourselves, so we took our time walking around and snapping a few pics from different angles. Even if you’re not big into astronomy, it just has this calming, thoughtful vibe. Definitely worth a quick stop if you’re nearby.

Miejsce warte zobaczenia. Urokliwy zakątek w pobliżu dworca i Starówki.
