Museum of the Polish Post Office — Attraction in Gdansk

An important visit for those interested in WWII history, especially. Though nearby Westerplatte often gets more attention, since that’s where the very first shots of the war took place, the post office was also attacked by the Nazis, almost simultaneously.

Truly a “David vs Goliath” story, akin to a Polish “Alamo”, where a handful of brave postal services workers defended their free-city of Danzig for 15 hours, against a much larger German force. Sadly, they were eventually overtaken, & those that were not killed in the attack, were later executed as “unlawful combatants”.

The exhibition is small, but interesting…10 zloty entrance. The monument out front is beautiful, & the wall where the defenders were forced to stand & surrender is also preserved with a monument, a couple...

A site which has a lot of historical importance. The Defence of the Polish Post Office in Danzig(Gdańsk) was one of the first acts of World War II in Europe, as part of the Invasion of Poland.On September 1, 1939, Polish personnel defended the building for some 15 hours against assaults by the SS Heimwehr Danzig (SS Danzig Home Defense), local SA formations and special units of Danzig police having about 200 armed personnel. The lighter shade stones were restored on a later day as this place was burnt to ashes. The site also has a monument that shows a mortally wounded Postal Officer handing his rifle to Nike, the Undying Goddess of Victory. He is, as Poland was; bowed but...

Gdańsk - miejsce wielu ważnych historycznych miejsc. Troszkę na uboczu, troszkę jakby zapomniany - pomnik Obrońców Poczty Polskiej. A przecież pobrzeża nad Motławą, blisko w prostej linii od Hali Targowej, w okolicy Starówki

Pomnik poświęcony bohaterom - obrońcom Poczty Polskiej z 01 września 1939 r. Mimo znacznej przewagi wroga, użycia artylerii, podpalenia budynku - około 14 godzin pocztowcy ( 59 osób) zaciekle bronili się. Aresztowani ( 38 osób ) zostali rozstrzelani.

Wojnę przeżyło tylko 5 osób.

Pomnik odsłonięto w 40-tą rocznicę wybuchu II wojny światowej ( 1979 )

Wykonany ze srebrzystej stali robi wrażenie- przedstawiając jednego z umierających pocztowców. Bogini Zwycięstwa Nike symbolicznie podaje umierającemu karabin . Z torby pocztowca wysypują się listy ... Wokół unoszą się gołębie pokoju...

Od 22 marca 2022 przy budynku Poczty Polskiej - otwarto plenerowy wernisaż wystawy " Polacy w Wolnym Mieście Gdańsku "

Data otwarcia wernisażu wiąże się z tragiczną rocznicą ( 82) egzekucji dokonanej na 67 Polakach z Wolnego Miasta Gdańska. Zginęli oni w obozie zagłady Stutthof w Wielki Piątek 1940 roku.
