Targ Rybny - Fishmarkt — Restaurant in Gdansk

Considering the mostly very good reviews of this place, I had an unacceptable experience here in Aug'24. To be clear, the food was actually quite good. I had Fish and Chips and the fish was excellent and large. Fried was standard thin generic variety and nothing special but not bad.

The issue i had was that the service was ridiculously slow, to the point that it actually ruined my meal. To be clear, it was NOT busy... maybe 4 of 5 other occupied tables when i was there and 3 waiters on duty, so really no excuse for poor service.

My order actually arrived relatively quickly, but with no ketchup, so I asked for some immediately upon receiving my food. Unbelievably, it took the waiter 10-15 minutes to deliver the ketchup and i saw no sign of him in that time (possibly on smoke break i guess, but this was unacceptable since i couldnt start my meal and was just sitting there for 10-15 minutes). Finally, he came with the ketchup but didnt even bother to apologize for the ridiculous delay.

So, I finally start eating, and after a few minutes, I was out of Coke. Once again, no waiter in site for 5 min, then 10 min, then more. During this time I noticed the staff highly interactive with the guests inside, especially when they were leaving, but again, no waiter bothered to come check on me.

Finally, it was more than 15 minutes without drink. By this time my fish was cold, and though Id only been able to eat half of it because of the 2 insane delays, I had had enough and decided i was leaving. Luckily, i remembered the exact price of the fish and drink and left that exact amount on the table and just walked out. Not one person even noticed. Realistically, I should have only paid for half the order since that was all I was able to eat directly because of the inadequacies or indifference of the wait staff. but since I didnt want to risk any issues in a foreign country, I just decided to pay the full amount. I really have to wonder if this is more of a "locals only" kind of place that doesnt care to cater to foreigners. Seems weird for a super-touristy location like this, but I cant think of another reason for this severe...

My wife and have been traveling through Poland for the past 10 days and she was looking forward to a dinner at the Fish Markt. It did not disappoint, in fact it exceeded our expectations and hopes. Paul, our waiter, was helpful in making suggestions on the menu, helping with our Polish, and making us feel welcome with a few well placed jokes. We had a table outside and could experience the real Gdansk with only locals walking by. My wife ordered "Herring, various ways" and could not decide which of the three regional preparations she enjoyed the most. The Bouillabaisse was incredible. I had the Cream of Lobster was truly exquisite in presentation and taste. I was not so adventurous with the Fish and Chips but the Polish version was light, flaky, and wonderful. The meal ended with an traditional digestive of Goldwasser (for me) and a regional herbal flavored liqueur (for my wife) and whose name I will not insult by trying to spell it. Ask for it and you will love it. Better yet, ask Paul. He will help with a friendly smile. It was the perfect ending to a day of exploring the Solidarity museum and walking setting the Old Town. I enjoyed the location and the decor however the Fish Medley for two was really not good. Overcooked underseasoned and not really tasty. Also the shrimp cocktail we ordered as part of the shrimp festival had delicious shrimp and nice greens but someone decied to douse it all in a thousand island dressing that could have been available on the side while preserving the palate of the diner. Finally as a promotional with the shrimp cocktail was provided a glass of Prosecco. However this was provided begrudgingly only after all the food was served and the issue was brought up. It was not immediately presented when the shrimp was delivered. Lastly the cost was 300+ pln for two. This included one beer. Not a bargain though the amount of food was large the quality was low. I won't return. I'm surprised by the quantity of good reviews I see here. I hope for their sake my/our experience was the exception not the rule.
