The Swan Tower, known locally as Baszta Łabędź, is a historic Gothic tower located in Gdańsk, Poland. Positioned at the Fish Market (Targ Rybny) by the Motława River, it is the northernmost part of the medieval fortifications of the Main Town.
Historical Overview Originally built in the latter half of the 14th century on the foundations of the Fisher Tower (Fischturm) by the Teutonic Order, the Swan Tower played a crucial role in controlling access to the port on the Motława River. After being damaged and then rebuilt in 1454, it received its current form: a truncated brick cylinder topped with a conical ceramic roof. The tower was part of the city’s defensive network until it lost its military significance and was subsequently surrounded by small residential buildings.
Post-War Restoration The tower was significantly damaged during World War II. However, it was restored in 1967 and now stands as a preserved historical monument. Today, it houses the headquarters of the Polish Maritime Club. In 2010, the construction of the Hilton Hotel nearby further highlighted the tower’s presence in the cityscape.
