Notice for all tourists !!! Definitely go there but be very careful !!! It is a unique experience that you have to do in Funchal. It looks amazing, entrance is free, you get an amazing selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and souvenirs. Just be very careful this is not just a market, this is also a tourist trap. Fruits are crazily expensive!!! So my recommendation is to go there, enjoy the experience, see it as a guided tour. The guys trying to rip you off actually do have valuable information, so enjoy the tour, listen to what they say, taste all the fruits, you do not even have to insist because they will make you try the fruits one by one. Ask many questions as they are very knowledgeable (which colour is the fruits when ready, when more acid, what is the season where is it produced etc) With this knowledge you can then : 1) Know back home how to pick your fruits better. 2) Go to other cheaper fruit markets around the city. Where they are not going to rip you off and purchase your fruits there rather than at the Mercado dos Lavradores. (Your wallet will thank me!) 3) Many fruits are actually not locally produced ! (Some of the Maracujas etc) and you will not find them on other markets around the island ! My recommendation is to buy them here, but be mindful they are luxury products of importation and come with a very expensive price tag (4€ a Maracuja Lemon for example) so don't buy 10 of them, and be aware of what you buy! If the guy has been too pushing not friendly, or trying to force you to buy, move away ! There are about 8-10 fruit sellers and find another friendlier one ! Once you found a friendly one, get the fruit degustation tour and buy some overpriced fruits. Just don't consider it as being ripped of but rather as paying a guide to take you through the tropical fruits and getting a free sample to take with you. The price tag will felt more deserved and you will feel less guilty to have been ripped off. Remember 4€ per Maracuja in average ! If you would have given a 10€ tip in another situation, then get 2 Maracujas and the job is done...

This bustling market is a true paradise for food lovers, offering a cornucopia of fresh produce, local delicacies, and authentic flavors. As you stroll through the market, you'll be greeted by an explosion of colors and aromas. The stalls are brimming with a diverse array of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices, all locally sourced and bursting with flavor. From juicy tropical fruits like bananas and passion fruit to the earthy aroma of fresh herbs, the market is a sensory delight. One of the highlights of the Farmers' Market is the selection of exotic fruits unique to Madeira. Taste the succulent maracujá (passion fruit), the tangy pitanga (Surinam cherry), or the sweet and creamy anona (custard apple). These tropical treats offer a taste of paradise and are not to be missed. The market is not only a haven for fresh produce but also a showcase of Madeiran culture and culinary traditions. Discover a wide variety of traditional snacks, preserves, and artisanal products made by local producers. Indulge in mouthwatering treats such as honey cake, sugarcane molasses, or homemade jams that reflect the island's rich culinary heritage. The ambiance at the Farmers' Market is lively and bustling, with locals and tourists mingling and sharing their love for food. Engage in friendly conversations with the vendors, who are always eager to share their knowledge and recommendations for the best flavors of Madeira. Take a break from exploring the stalls and head to one of the market's cozy cafes or food stalls. Here, you can savor traditional Madeiran dishes such as bolo do caco (traditional bread), espetada (meat skewers), or fresh seafood delicacies. Pair your meal with a glass of Madeira wine, a world-renowned local specialty.

Hete is the thing about this market - it's a must see BUT it's a MUSTN'T BUY expitence. The variety of merchandise is amazing and you sure of the array of fruit and vegetable (and do not be filled by the humble potato or tomato or apple as the tase of Madeira produce is not only as nutritious and organic as it gets, but also delicious. Soil might be as well the biggest treasure of this island as it's volcanic and rich in minerals for thousands of years, and the food here is just uniqually infused with flavour. And the taste of it is in the market. However, be aware! You will get a tourist price there and they are quite convincing when selling their product. So, I would recommend to go and enjoy the many product there from the fruits &veg, to spices, fresh flowers or seeds, souvenirs. To give you a flavour of the proces to expect: a dragon fruit is €23 per kg, yes! per kg - check pictures, or passion fruit at €20. One very interesting fruit you that is quite rare is monasera fruit which is a very comming plant in many householfs around the word and I personally encountered it first here in Madeira , yet I will still day do not fall fir it (more on how to get it below). A separate part of the building is fish market which opens early in the morning and finishes early afternoon. Again, well worth of the visit but be careful when buying. If you want to try some of the amazing flavours of Madeira, ask any of your guides on one of the tours you are surely to get when in Madeira as they usually are honest and will direct you to a good spot for fruit and veg.

The Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmers' Market) in Funchal is a bustling and iconic market that offers a diverse array of fresh produce, flowers, local crafts, and traditional Madeiran products. The market is renowned for its colorful and vibrant display of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. You'll find a wide variety of locally grown and seasonal items, including exotic fruits like passion fruit, bananas, and custard apples. The market also features a dedicated area for beautiful flowers and ornamental plants. It's a feast for the eyes with a burst of colors and fragrances. In addition to fresh produce, the market offers a variety of traditional Madeiran crafts, textiles, and souvenirs. You can find items like wicker baskets, embroidered linens, and ceramic tiles that reflect the local culture. The Mercado dos Lavradores is housed in a historic building known for its distinctive architectural features. The facade is adorned with beautiful Portuguese tiles, and the interior is a lively and bustling space filled with the vibrant energy of locals and tourists alike. Make sure to check their opening hours and days before you visit! The prices are expensive, but there are some fruits that you will only find here.

BEWARE!!! The fruit stall is a complete TOURIST TRAP! The sales people/ con artists will lure you in by offering free samples of tropical fruit which they have artificially sweetened. We didn’t know this at the time and wanted to buy two dragonfruit and then the sales man added two tiny mangoes too. We didn’t think much of it because it’s just some fruit. We then went inside to pay. They weigh everything but don’t give you prices and the total was over €31!! For four pieces of fruit!! I said that it was expensive and the guy just shrugged and said yes well it’s tropical fruit. We naively paid for it but immediately regretted it as we knew we had been conned. These people should be locked away. They are taking advantage of the genuineness of tourists and have left a really bad taste for us. We tried the fruit that evening and it had no taste! Completely bland and not sweet. Guess we learnt our lesson!

This is the 2nd fruit store right next to the fish market on the ground floor. First of all, once you walk in, they will suggest you to try the fruits and then they become pushy and start to keep on persuading you to buy. When you select the fruit, you wouldn’t know how much it is until you go to the cashier for weighting the fruit. The cashier lady was super rude and she ordered me to stand in front of the cashier and don’t go around. Her attitude was extremely rude and terrifying. When I checked the review from others, there were shops overcharged the customers and chatting with the weight. That’s why they were so rude. The prices aren’t cheap either,it costs 25+ Euro for 2 passion fruits, 1 mango and 1 monstera fruit while the monstera fruit was the most expensive. Overall, the major problem was the bad attitude of the cashier lady being so rude for us to buy such expensive fruit.
