Nestled in the heart of downtown Lisbon, Igreja de Santa Maria Madalena is a striking testament to the city's resilience and artistic spirit. Its beautiful Manueline portal—classified as a National Monument—greets visitors with intricate stonework and historical significance, having survived the devastating 1755 earthquake.

Inside, the church blends late Renaissance and Baroque styles, showcasing painted ceilings, vibrant tilework, and remarkable sculptures by Machado de Castro. The serene ambiance lends itself to quiet reflection, while the church's role as a cultural hub draws diverse communities for Mass and classical music concerts. With centuries of reconstruction visible in its façade and chapels, and even Roman relics across the street, this church is a must-visit for lovers of history, architecture, and Lisbon’s...

The Igreja da Madalena, or Church of Saint Mary Magdalene, in Lisbon is a captivating historical site. Easily accessible by street car and just a couple blocks out of the busy downtown Lisbon shopping area. I tons of restaurants and coffee shops nearby so feel free to walk by if you’re in the neighborhood.

Originally built in the 12th century, it was tragically destroyed in the Great Earthquake of 1755 and subsequently rebuilt. Its resilient façade incorporates a stunning Manueline portal, a vestige from the 16th century that miraculously survived the disaster. Inside, visitors can admire a painted wooden ceiling and notable 18th-century sculptures by Machado de Castro. This church offers a glimpse into Lisbon's past, showcasing architectural beauty and historical endurance in the heart...

It was okay as we were told of the delay, so people went off and grabbed some lunch or coffee and came back. The church is beautiful and gives the right atmosphere for prayer and reflection. At the mass there was a Portuguese / African ( apologies, but I don't know which country ) choir with the most beautiful sounds and music - it just added to the solemnity of the Church. Definitely...
