Santa Luzia is a National Monument church located at Largo Santa Luzia in the Alfama district. I have really enjoyed seeing and spending time here during a couple of visits to Lisbon. The church is just next to an outstanding Miradouro (viewpoint) where you can see the lower Alfama district down below.

Historically, this church was originally built in the 12th century on the grounds of former Moorish fortifications. What you see today, however, seems to be a rebuilt church, after the previous building was destroyed during the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake.

There are some interesting points of interest regarding Santa Luzia but what I most like about this particular church are the azulejo tile scenes located on the southern walls of the church exterior. You can see them up close while visiting the garden and miradouro there.

One panel scene depicts the siege upon the grounds of St. George Castle in 1147 AD by the Christian army led by the liberator of Lisbon and Portugal's first king, D. Alfonso Henriques.

The other large panel is Praça do Comércio and predates the infamous 1755 earthquake so it is neat to see what the square looked like in the centuries before then. There is also a tile image of St. Lucy. You can have a look at them all in the pictures submitted with...

A friendly old man guides you in and on a small billboard they ask for a small donation. So we did and entered a small and intimate church. Quiet church music plays from loudspeakers. If you want a still moment, do the donation, sit...

I visited this church only because it's placed right next to Miradouro de Santa Luzia. It's not one of the most interesting churches in Lisbon. Plain, simple facade and also simple interior. You don't need more than 10 minutes to visit it.

The Santa Luzia Church is situated in a place of great beauty and symbolism: the Santa Luzia viewpoint from where one has a privileged view over the most typical old quarter of Lisboa: Alfama.
