Taberna Do Castelo — Restaurant in Lisbon

Summary: great place with really nice food and awesome staff. Details: visiting Lisbon we planned to dine each day in a different location as we did in Porto. Suffice to say we ended up having our dinner in Taberna do Castelo 9 out of 10 times :). After a few days we felt really at home there. Kids asking when do we go for dinner really meant: when are we visiting Taberna again :)? One time we did not go there kids were really disappointed. From a food perspective I tried different dish everyday and the worst I got was good on a single occasion. Others varied from very good to great. And then last but not least: service. That is what puts Taberna do Castelo head and shoulders above its competition. And I am a shy guy who is not so much into small talk and social interactions. We only decided to give this restaurant a go as it was on the same street that we were staying on. It did not initially seem particularly authentic or inviting - especially as we enjoy good quality authentic food wherever we travel. However, we gave it a go one evening as we were way too tired to venture further and we were PLEASANTLY SURPRISED!

The clam pasta dish was actually really delicious and the sea bream dish was very fresh (even though the vegetables could have done with some seasoning). Also - it was €14.99 for a set meal which included our main, a drink (some alcohol included), a house dessert and an espresso. We felt it was great bang for your buck and worth it as the food was better than expected, we left with such full bellies and felt great it was not expensive.

It s a mixed review, but I figure I need to put it out so people can be aware. Our experience on the spot was great, most of us ordered seafood dish with helpful suggestions from the waiter and they were all right on, the shrimp dish was especially delicious, wine was great too. I would give it at least 4.5 if my son didn't suffer a stomach ache at night and on for a couple of days. Apart from the rest of us, he ordered a pork dish, said the flavor was ok but texture a bit strange. He finished anyway and started vomiting at night continuously for a whole day. My daughter had diarrhea for half day after she took one tasting bite. The rest of us didn't touch the dish were perfectly fine. None of my son or daughter had anything else between the meal and the symptoms. I definitely would have avoided the pork dish had I known....
