If you only have a few hours to visit something in Bucharest and you want a taste of Romanian culture, look no further. This is the first museum we visited during our short stay this summer. Prepare Romanian RON because you'll have artisans and beekeepers coming from different parts of Romania with their booths on the alleys - products from the beehive (try the best honey, better than Manuka honey and way cheaper, "miere de mană"/ forest honey or honeydue honey), handmade musical instruments, handmade jewelry etc. plus the museum's store. You need a good 2-3 hours if you also want to eat at the restaurant near the entrance. You have a piece of different areas of Romania and you won't regret not being able to travel to the origin place of those houses, churches or mills. I would say you have to be knowledgeable, familiar with the Romanian traditions or have a good guide for you to appreciate the gems there or pick what is really traditional but generally you'll discover the mastery, talents and passion of people who still keep old traditions or love the local cuisine. Each artisan may have a story. We had a bit of time to talk to some of them and it made our visit...

I strongly recommend this museum to anyone who is in the area and has a bit of time to kill. I would probably be more enthusiastic about it if I could have visited the inside of the houses; but today, Friday, February 8th, they were all closed.

With the student discount, the price is ridiculously low. I paid 4 lei.

I stayed there a little over 1 hour and a half, but if you're going with children or even just friends, you are likely to get more than 2 hours of visiting.

Some of the houses are really interesting and impressive in many ways. They are also grouped by regions and periods. In front of each house you will find a sign in Romanian and English detailing the elements of the house and their function, origin etc.

The whole museum/park is very calm and enjoyable. There are a LOT of cats wandering around (you might not see them at first). I befriended one of them and he wouldn't let me stop petting him !

Anyway, this is a great museum if you want to learn a bit about the history of Romania and maybe even teach your kids. Or just let them run around

If you go during the summer you will probably find more open houses and activities...

The museum is not made with comfortable alleys. I didn't like it. The toilets were dirty, the staff was rude and everywhere they sold various souvenirs, clothes, sweets, apples, pots, pots, roosters, honey, homemade jam and whatever you can think of. The buildings were from different periods starting from 1773, but they were not arranged by district or year. Very chaotic. It was messy, dirty, untidy. Like an Arab market. It was full of traders without hygiene standards at the stalls. I have no words. On the other hand, you can't go into the houses. There are some blurry pictures in front that you can't see if it rains. There is no such disappointment. I don't recommend it for a visit. Under no circumstances should you go there. In all of Romania I wonder if this museum or the taxi drivers are worse. They couldn't fit a suitcase while you're looking at the museum. What a callous and heartless person you have to be to see a woman with a suitcase and not help her. I don't know what kind of people these people were. I'm very disappointed. And one star is too many for...

This museum is one-of-a-kind, probably one of the most renowned in Bucharest - and rightly so. By visiting it, you can take a stroll through the ancient world of the Romanian village. Most of the houses are original ones, from various parts of the country; they have been dismantled, transported and rebuilt here. The oldest one is from the 17th century. You will also find here old wooden churches, windmills, stables, an amusement wheel, a fishery, a dog house, and various archaic mechanical devices that farmers used in order to dry fruit, obtain vegetable oil, crush grapes and so on. It's really an immersive experience! Next to each house, you'll find a bilingual sign with information about the building; reading it is highly recommended, as it will help you get a better understanding about how people lived in times past. The scenery only adds to the charm of the place, as you walk under oaks and chestnut trees, along the shore of Herastrau Lake.
