One of the interesting things to see at the Kremlin is the Tsar Cannon located just outside the Ivan the Great Bell Tower. This is a medieval style artillery piece of silly proportion, more of a spectacle then an effective instrument of war. Cast in bronze in 1586, the Tsar Cannon is recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest on its kind in the world. The Tsar Cannon is huge and fun to see. Be patient with the crowds and you will eventually be able to take unobstructed photos or have your own picture taken next to the cannon. Note: Another similar large scale item is the enormous Tsar Bell located not far away on the other side of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower. It is worth having a look-see as well.

The Tsar Cannon, a beautiful and iconic symbol of Russian history, stands within the Moscow Kremlin. Cast in bronze in 1586, its colossal size and ornate decorations showcase the craftsmanship of its time. Visiting the Tsar Cannon offers a glimpse into Russia's storied past and is a must-see attraction for anyone exploring Moscow.

It was an interesting fat Cannon that around it was crowded and everybody was taking photos with it :) the balls was cute and the color of the pipe was beautiful, the artwork on it was very interesting as well, it seems like an art work not a weapon for war, it's like paint or sculpture. The balls was perfectly spherical.

The Tsar Cannon is a unique item of the Kremlin's artillery collection.

It was created in 1586 in Moscow's Cannon Court by eminent Russian cannon-caster Andrei Chokhov on the order of Tsar Feodor Ioannovich, the sovereign ruler of All Great Russia. The Tsar Cannon is located on the west side of Ivanovskaya Square, between the 'Ivan the Great' BellTower and the Twelve Apostles' Church.

Judging by the Tsar Cannon's calibre of 890 mm, it was given its name as the world’s biggest cannon. The gun's tube's weight is about 40 ton, its length is 5,34 m. The cannon's surface is adorned with the cast figured friezes, vegetation ornament, memorial inscriptions and an equestrian image of Tsar Feodor Ioannovich. In 1835, the Tsar Cannon was fixed on the carriage specially cast for it at the Berdt’s factory in St. Petersburg. Four hollow decorative cannonballs were made at the same time.

The Tsar Cannon has never shot. Due to historical circumstances, it was never used in a war.

Initially, the Tsar Cannon was fixed on Red Square near the Spasskiye Gate. In 1706, it was moved into the Kremlin, fixed at first in the Arsenal’s inner yard and then at the main gate (with another cannon). In 1835, the two cannons were staged on the new bases, especially cast on the project of A. Bryullov. In 1843, the Tsar Cannon and other old Russian cannons were placed in front of the former Armoury Chamber, opposite the Arsenal. The captured cannons remained by the Arsenal.

In 1960, when the Palace of Congresses (now it is named the Kremlin's State Palace) was under construction, the building of the Armoury Chamber (architect I. Yegotov) was dismantled. The old cannons were transferred to the Arsenal building.

This unique artillery piece was cast at the Moscow Cannon Foundary in 1586. A bronze cannon more than five meters long with a calibre of 890 millimetres, it was made by the court craftsman Andrei Chokhov. This gigantic weapon weighs more than 39 tons. Since 1960 it has stood on a gun-carriage in Ivanovskaya Square surrounded by vast cast-iron cannon balls, each of which weighs about a thousand kilos. The cannon balls are purely decorative, as the Tsar Cannon has never been used in military action, although it was originally intended as a powerful weapon in the Kremlin’s defences. It was most likely designed to fire grape-shot, hence its other nickname: “Russia’s Shotgun”. The gun’s barrel is decorated with figurative reliefs and a portrait of Tsar Fedor Ioanovich on horseback. Thanks to its unusual measurements this is one of the largest and oldest cannons in the world, and has earned the proud name of...
