My parents and I are Brazilians. I speak English, but my parents don't, so we used Portuguese audio. The audio was unreliable, with big chunks of English in between. We decided to do the Soweto tour when we reached stop number 7, and buying the ticket was a nuisance. The card machine was not working and people did not allow us inside the van until we got the ticket (were they afraid we were going to run away?) and this prevented us from getting three sits together Since we couldn't sit together, I wasn't able to translate anything to my parents (since the Soweto tour is in English only), which seriously jeopardized their experience The Soweto tour guide was very annoying, spoke with a thick accent and tried to force an interaction that just wasn't happening We weren't able to do shopping in Soweto's street market because there was no time. We weren't able to enter Mandela's House because there was no time. But there was time to stand in both places for long explanations we could easily read in a book or find online. It felt like a lecture, and not really sightseeing. People should be given a chance to just skip the explanation and go for the sights (a simple "now I'm gonna tell you Mandela's life story for the next 15 minutes. If you don't want to listen to it, meet us here afterwards"). Then we finished off the Soweto tour, after 2 long hours, and went back to stop number 7. "Let's use the toilet", was the first thing that crossed our minds. Well, there's no toilet (unless you go through a metal detector inside the casino and miss the next bus and have to wait 40 minutes in the basking African sun for the next one). Not a good...
Read moreThe buses were clean and nice and ran on time. The drivers were friendly. The problem was the destinations. The playground on a Saturday that's listed as a place to eat drink and see local crafts had about four craft tables and not that many choices for food. not a great neighborhood to go out and look around instead. The company even had some security people at the bus stop. I thought the Mining outdoor museum was fairly anemic. Some things to read but not that interesting and didn't feel like a great part of town. The Nelson Mandela foundation was interesting and was good for 40 minutes. The part-time museum was interesting, although somewhat overwhelming. I think if I would've do it again, I would just go there Not necessarily take the bus. We started at Rosebank, which is a nice mall if you want to shop and have food or drink. Lots of options there. We had done Soweto The day before, on a biking trip with Book Ibhoni It really enjoyed that so didn't need to go back. We didn't try constitution Hill, the zoo, Newtown, or Melrose. The audio was fairly interesting and it was interesting driving through downtown, which you absolutely wouldn't want to do on your own. Everybody told us it is unsafe and rundown, although it was interesting to Drive-through a little bit. The hop on hop off tour was reasonably priced and will run but again, the destinations...
Read moreHave done the Johannesburg tour three times: nice, informative & interesting stops. Did the Soweto tour once, but don't recommend it: the guide talked too much about irrelevant things (and was in my experience annoying), we didn't stop at the interesting places, and at the Hector memorial stop another guide was forced upon is (which you then have to also tip) after our tour guide had already explained everything. So no, not worth it. And had a very unpleasant customer service experience when I called whether a special was possible as I was taking five township kids on the tour as a learning experience. I'm happy to pay for them, but asked if I could maybe go for free, as I wasn't going for myself and have already been and paid three times and always promote the tour with guests. They have every right to say no to that, but the way it was done was EXTREMELY unfriendly, as if I was some evil person trying to get a free-ride to everything. They then also informed me they, as an organisation, do NOTHING to help the disadvantaged in this country. This made me decide to not do the tour again, not promote it with others, and not bring township kids on the...
