My husband and myself had a wonderful week in Cadiz and booked the Palacio del Virrey Laserna for our last night as Jerez is closer to the airport for our flight home the next day. On arrival we were delighted with our choice and were excited to be staying in such a lovely, historical place. We were greeted by the younger brother who showed us to our room and first impressions were that it was a nice room, although the room we were allocated wasn't as nice as some shown in the photos on the website - still it was perfectly adequate for a one night stay. At first we were very pleased with the bathroom and the view of the courtyard from both the bathroom and bedroom windows. However, on closer inspection, the bathroom is very tired and badly in need of improving. Photos below show the messy grout, cracked tiles, flaky paintwork on the balcony doors etc. The shower curtain rail was hanging off the wall, as was the ceiling light in both the bathroom and the bedroom. We do realise that it is an old building (the annex that the hotel rooms are situated in was built in 1929, so not actualy in the ancient palace), but feel that there is no excuse for shoddy surroundings, photos below. The bedroom was well maintained and we feel that the bathroom should also be renovated before they continue to rent it out. At 125 Euros just for the room, no breakfast, the standard really needs to be improved. My husband decided to have a bath and discovered that there is no tap! The only way of filling the bath is to run the shower, most unusual we thought!! There are, however, a whole host of extras in the room, possibly too many - there was a bowl of peanuts, 2 cakes, a tin of biscuits, a box of chocolates, a coffee machine and a jug of water (a sealed bottle would have been preferred). All of these were much appreciated but for a one night stay, maybe too much. We were given the opportunity of a tour round the palace, hosted by the very knowledgable younger brother, which was excellent. We really enjoyed being shown around and found the history of the place very interesting. On trying to check out in the morning (9.30am) we found the palace to be locked up, but luckily we had the telephone number which we called and someone was with us within a few minutes to take the keys from us. He didn't ask if we had enjoyed our stay and if everything was alright, just remarked that it was early! We explained that we had a plane to catch hence the 9.30am exit, not too early really we thought, not as if it was 7am or something ......... All in all, a memorable experience, but can't say we felt it was value for money due to the state of the bathroom, although had it been...

This was a really special place. Loved this Palace, which was just amazing with its history and atmosphere. We were upgraded to a lovely room with a four poster bed. Thoughtful touches had been put out for us including a coffee making machine, a packet of biscuits, chocolates, nuts and sponge cakes. We stayed three nights. We could have done with a few drawers to put our clothes away as there was just a wardrobe, but this is only a comment not a criticism. Also not much space to put toiletries out in the bathroom. However the bed was extremely comfortable and we slept extremely well in this very quiet room. Wi-fi was also good.||||The garden was also lovely with its swimming pool and sun loungers. Towels were also provided for our swim.||||The location of the Palacio is also perfect - right in the centre, so that we could walk everywhere and enjoy the sights and the local bars. Parking was also available close by. We particularly liked Tabanco a la Feria for the authentic flamenco performances and also Tabankino Tabanco Gourmet for the gastronomic food and sherry tasting experience and also Atuvera for their fusion tapas.||||If you have the opportunity do take the tour of the Palace, it is really...

An unassuming exterior belies what awaits inside. This place still has the feel of a home still lived in and is bedecked with treasures and art throughout. The family who now own the palace have done so for a long time and have had a consistently close relationship with the Spanish monarchy both before is exile, during it and afterwards. It is only possible to view the palace by guided tour done in small groups with a number of languages available (English being one)

We had to go and find a cash machine as they only took cash. We left the pushchair in the lobby, as understandably we couldn't take it through the house. There are some stairs to navigate from the garden back into the house. In each room, items of interest were pointed out. Our tour guide was the son of the family, who still lives in the house. Would be great to stay in the house and amuse the pool in the garden.
