El Almacen — Restaurant in Jerez

Three years ago when I first visited El Almacén the food was fresh, abundant, varied and reasonably priced. Whenever I came back it was the same delight all over again. This time, however, it was a very sad disappointment. Unfortunately, and I truly mean it, the worst food I had during my tour around Adalucia. None of my last time favourites are on the menu. The food is not fresh. The portions of regular dishes, not tapas, are as small as tapas but priced very high. Tapas are not what they used to be either - bruschette for instance is just one slice of bread cut into a few small pieces. Wine and drinks menu is solid and good value still. All in all a huge disappointment, as I was so looking forward to returning to this place and it's one of the main reasons for the detour to Jerez. I hope they restore their previous standards. While gently strolling around the Alcazar and Plaza del Arenal as tourists from foreign country, we stumbled upon this restaurant. Some of us are vegetarians so we were not quite sure of the options available here but it turned out to be a wonderful surprise!

The Tapas and Sherry we ordered were fantastic. Serves spoke broken English but were willing to help us out with our questions. Their recommendation on the cream sherry was good too (but then again, you wouldn't expect to be served bad sherry in Jerez!)

Muchos de vosotros sabéis que Jerez es como mi segunda casa. Aunque la verdad es que no salgo a comer fuera todo lo que me gustaría. Tengo varios sitios a los que siempre acudo, de cabecera, por llamarlos de alguna manera. El Almacén es uno de ellos. Un local innovador que ha sabido adaptarse a los tiempos con innumerables cambios, casi todos para bien.

Está ubicado en una situación extraordinaria. En la pequeña calle Latorre, junto al Ayuntamiento de la ciudad y a la bulliciosa Plaza del Arenal. No es fácil de encontrar ya que no suele ser una calle de paso, pero merece la pena acercarse. Lo primero que te llamará la atención es su elaborada decoración. Un estilo modernito con un elevado toque vintage. Para que lo entiendas, muebles de madera, sillas de diferentes tipos, fotografías en blanco y negro populares con carteles de corridas de toros, etc. Todo muy raro pero que en conjunto queda bien. Son de especial relevancia sus arcos de estilo árabe.

En cuanto a la comida, es bastante buena. Sus ensaladas están deliciosas, como la de pollo con salsa teriyaki. También destaca su pastel de cous cous, sus berenjenas, la mini hamburguesa de retinto, el burrito de cola de toro y su paté casero. No me hace especial gracia la ensaladilla, pero bueno, no se puede acertar siempre.

En el servicio cojean un poco. No es bueno. Diría que regular tirando para cutrecillo. Los camareros parece que están desganados, tristes y algo sosos. En cuanto a precio, bueno, para ser Jerez es un sitio de precio medio alto, pero para ser justos, creo que con la calidad que ofrecen es algo más que...
