The Bischofshof in Basel is a historic building complex located adjacent to the Basel Minster. It served as the residence of the Prince-Bishops of Basel, who were both secular and ecclesiastical rulers of the city until the Reformation in the 16th century.
Constructed in the 14th century, the Bischofshof was a significant center of power and administration. The complex included the Münstersaal, built between 1360 and 1380, which initially functioned as a refectory for the cathedral chapter. During the Council of Basel (1431–1449), the hall was repurposed for university events associated with the council. In 1458, Bishop Johann von Venningen established a library in the Münstersaal for the cathedral chapter, during which time the notable frescoes were created.
The Bischofshof also played a role in the development of Basel's cultural institutions. In 1856, Wilhelm Wackernagel housed the Medieval Collection in the Bischofshof and its underlying chapel. This collection later became the foundation of the Basel Historical Museum, officially opened in 1894 in the Barfüsserkirche.
Today, the Bischofshof stands as a testament to Basel's rich ecclesiastical and cultural history. While not regularly open to the public, guided tours occasionally provide access to its preserved medieval interiors, including 15th-century wall paintings and the paneled room of Bishop Arnold von Rotberg.
