Our time at the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, a hotel renowned as Asia’s number one and one of the top properties in the world, was indeed luxurious. The staff provided excellent service, and the overall experience was enjoyable, though after spending several days there, certain areas stood out as needing attention. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly, and a bottle of purified water was provided in the hotel limousine shuttle. However, we found the taste of the water to be somewhat off-putting—more akin to a laboratory experiment than refreshing hydration. While this may be a subjective observation, we believe that for the price point of the limousine service, a simple option of local spring water would offer guests a more pleasant choice. In the lobby, we took advantage of the opportunity to engage in a game of chess, but unfortunately, the set provided was far below the expected standard. The quality appeared subpar, and to make matters worse, a pawn was missing. In a hotel of this caliber, attention to such details should be paramount. We noticed that two of the main restaurants, particularly Ciao by the river and a Chinese-themed venue, were closed. What struck us was not just that they were temporarily unavailable, but that they appeared to be permanently closed or perhaps awaiting a new concept, especially in the case of Ciao. This left parts of the property feeling incomplete and lacking the vibrancy expected of such a prestigious hotel. Our spa experience was pleasant in many respects, though the room temperature during our treatment was uncomfortably cold. While this is, of course, subjective, we both felt that a slightly warmer setting would have enhanced our ability to fully relax and enjoy the treatment. Late in the evening, around 10/11 PM, we understood that certain services in the lobby and smoking area would no longer be available. However, it would have been helpful to have clear signage informing guests of this. Additionally, we were surprised that no one had emptied the ashtrays, leaving the area looking untidy—an unexpected oversight for a hotel that prides itself on being Asia’s finest. The gym, while functional, had clearly seen better days. The parquet floors appeared to be from the 90s, the lamps in the meditation room were covered with noticeable dirt, and the ceiling painting was poorly executed, with visible roller brush lines detracting from the overall appearance. Moreover, the towels provided were more suitable for hand-washing than for covering one’s back, making it difficult to maintain cleanliness while using the equipment. For a hotel of this standing, such details should not be overlooked. Upon checking out, we wished to leave some direct feedback with the hotel manager, “Alex.” However, requesting his business card felt like trying to contact the CEO of the entire hospitality group. A firewall seemed to be in place, and instead, we were given the card of the day manager. While this was handled politely, the response felt unnecessarily complicated for a simple request to share feedback. Over time, it’s the small details that can gradually diminish even the most stellar reputations. We sincerely hope that the Mandarin Hospitality Group takes note of these observations and invests in addressing these minor, yet significant, issues. We also hope they will ensure their administrative team remains open to guest feedback and doesn’t become complacent—or betriebsblind, as the Germans say, meaning “blind to operational issues.” In conclusion, our stay was enjoyable, and the hotel retains much of its grandeur. However, with some refinements, the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok could once again reclaim its place as a shining star in the world of luxury hospitality.

From the exquisite breakfast buffet with a variety of international and local delicacies to the first-class restaurants - every dish is a revelation. The attention to detail and the perfection in the preparation make every meal an experience. The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok is more than a hotel – it's an institution. The combination of historic architecture, modern sophistication and the idyllic location on the river gives the hotel an atmosphere that is second to none. The Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok offers a truly magnificent experience that combines luxury with a unique riverfront ambiance. One of the standout features of this iconic hotel is its enchanting boat and boat ride offerings, which provide guests with a memorable and serene way to explore the city's waterways. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a beautiful boat that sets the tone for their stay. The hotel's private boat service is not only a convenient mode of transport across the Chao Phraya River but also an experience in itself. The boats are elegantly designed, reflecting traditional Thai aesthetics while providing modern comfort and safety. The journey on these boats offers a peaceful respite from the bustling city, allowing guests to soak in the scenic views of Bangkok's skyline and river life. The ambiance aboard the boats is exceptional. The gentle rocking of the vessel, coupled with the soft glow of lanterns during evening rides, creates a romantic and tranquil atmosphere. The staff aboard are attentive and courteous, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable ride. Whether you're heading to the hotel’s famous restaurants, the nearby cultural landmarks, or simply enjoying a leisurely cruise, the boat service at Mandarin Oriental adds a touch of magic to every journey. The hotel's riverside setting further enhances this delightful experience. The lush gardens, stylish decor, and panoramic river views create a serene oasis that feels miles away from the city's hustle and bustle. It's a perfect blend of luxury, culture, and tranquility, making every moment spent here truly unforgettable.

We stayed here for five nights, for both business and pleasure. The hotel itself has a long history, as well as old school charm and elegance. The staff are courteous, friendly and helpful, especially the butlers on each floor, and make it a point to remember your name. Our room was large with a great view of the Chao Praya river. It was slightly dated, and some of the cupboard doors were loose, but the bed was very comfortable. The down pillows were too soft but the butler quickly sent up foam pillows. There was ample hanging space for clothes, and the bathroom featured a bathtub. There were also enough power points, though more by the bed would be nice, rather than by the floor near the TV. The hotel features several excellent restaurants, such as the Author’s Lounge for high tea, and we tried the room service three times and the food was mostly good, and service again was excellent. The limo airport transfers, using BMWs with wifi, were comfortable and quick. The location is convenient, with hotel ferries going to the nearby Saphan Taksin BTS station. Situated on this side of the river, rather than on the Peninsular side where we used to frequent, also made transportation options to Silom and Central easier. There are other great food and massage options in the surrounding areas, especially towards the Robinsons store. I would recommend Nalin kitchen and the Bangrak night market for great Thai food. There are also several silver and jewellery shops, if that is your interest, Do note that after 6 pm, no shorts or flip flops are allowed (rightly so) in the restaurants. One thing though - the gym is located across the river, which is inconvenient, and they are planning further renovations as well.

After visiting a number of hotels, I can fully attest that Mandarin Oriental Bangkok provides its guest with the finest touches. Of course, the luxurious decor is the basis of an upscale hotel - but it’s done without overdoing. It looks clean, it feels clean but it’s also classy. Rooms are spacious and are separated into different clear sections: baggage/closet room, bath with shower, bed, living and dining area are clearly defined. You could say that it’s a pretty standard offering in 5-starred hotels, but here’s what’s different - the finishing touches. The water temperature at our shower was always overheating (it’s ok, it happens and we also have the bathtub side to shower with). I called the butler at 23:00, he came immediately and tried to fix it, but to no avail. He apologized saying hinge inside was broken. We understand, things break at the wrong times. The next morning we were greeted in front of the room and the manager approached us at our breakfast table - addressing us by our names. He said fixing it was on process and delivered some complimentary treats to our room. Later that afternoon I received a minor injury on my foot, I called the butler for some medication and she was offering to take me to the medical room. I said it’s just a small cut and I’d do ok with just some gauze tape and medication. 5 minutes later she was at the door. You know, sometimes it’s not about how classy the decorations are, or how expensive the paintings and sculptures are? It’s about the small things...the memories and stories we tell and pass on. I always thought “great service” was at the top of the echelon. Now I think “worth telling a story” is on top of “great service,” and that’s excellence redefined.
