As a flight attendant for major airlines and a former kindergarten teacher, I have made it a point to research and visit libraries around the world. AND collect library cards from countries all around the world. I recently embarked on my first trip to Asia with a friend. So hopeful to get my South Korea and Thailand library cards. I did indeed get my library card in Korea, not speaking the language and using Google Translate. Easy peasy in and out. With kindness and a smile. Not so much in Thailand! I tried in Chiang Mai, the librarian shook his head no and pointed to a Facebook page. In Phuket, the machine was down. So I researched again and treked across town to get one at the Bangkok City Library... the girl said no day passes because machine was down. I showed the Google translate statement saying I just wanted a card not important if it's active, can even be blank or even out of the trash can! Just the card for my collection. The two front desk workers were clearly trying to come up with a solution, and the supervisor very rudely said "no you don't have a work visa for Thailand. "... I had my display case of other country's library cards I have gotten and at that time one of the desk workers pulled out a Thailand library card and I said "yes like that just the card" the supervisor said "no it has someone else's name on it" I repeated "can I have a blank one" she said "NO". It's literally the silliest most curt decline I have ever had! And I have gotten cards from former communist countries and countries affected by war and even one reeling from hurricane devastation! I have donated money or paid fees just with the knowledge that it's an honor to have a public library system and we all should have deep respect for the staff and the community which supports these wonderful institutions. However even if you want to do all that... you won't get a blank library card from here. And not even a...

Although foreign and English language books were not the main focus, I still found plenty of interesting titles that catered to my interests. The first floor offered a great collection of travel books in English, while the second floor had an abundance of books in various foreign languages - my personal favorite.
What impressed me the most was the variety of tables and chairs available, suitable for any type of reader. There were even places to charge my devices and work on my laptop. Plus, the restrooms were spacious and clean, complete with full-body scan mirrors!
As I observed, people of different age groups and diverse backgrounds came to read, work, and study. That was inspiring. I hope this library continues to attract more visitors because there are still plenty of available seats. It pained me to see the AC could benefit so many more people.
