Taksim The Heartbeat of Istanbul

Discover Taksim, one of Istanbul's most iconic and vibrant neighborhoods. Located in the heart of the city, this popular tourist destination offers a multitude of treasures to explore.

Taksim Square and its surroundings

Start your visit at the famous Taksim Square and its Republic Monument. This emblematic place is the true pulse of the city, always bustling with activity. Nearby, numerous luxury hotels, rated 4 and 5 stars, offer accommodations at prices generally ranging between 100 and 200 dollars per night, making it an excellent starting point to discover the neighborhood.

Istiklal Street: A must-see shopping street

Continue on the legendary Istiklal Street, a lively pedestrian artery that stretches for several kilometers. This street is full of shops, restaurants, and lively cafes. Prices for local specialties, such as döner (meat sandwich) or traditional desserts like baklava, are clearly displayed, making your choices easy.

Take the time to sit in one of the many cafes to enjoy a Turkish tea or Turkish coffee, and take the opportunity to observe the hustle and bustle of the street.

Adjacent alleys: Authenticity and good deals

Explore the adjacent alleys, a veritable labyrinth of small shops and stalls where you will find products at more affordable prices. It is also the ideal place to taste local cuisine in typical restaurants. Don't miss the grilled meat skewers, salads, and mezes, which will delight your taste buds.

Among the must-try specialties, künefe, a pastry made with melted cheese and syrup, is a true delight not to be missed!

Galata and its wonders

Finish your exploration by joining the Galata district and its famous bridge. From this place, admire a spectacular view of the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus. It is also here that you will find the oldest underground metro line in Istanbul, a convenient way to continue your visit.

A unique immersion in Taksim

Whether you are looking for good deals, culinary discoveries or a vibrant atmosphere, the Taksim district has something to seduce you. Immerse yourself in the excitement of Istanbul for an...

In a city where roads often give motor vehicles a higher priority, it’s always nice to spend some time somewhere that forbids any vehicular traffic—and Istiklal Street is just that. It’s a perfect stretch of road to wander, sightsee, snap photos, eat simit and other yummy street food, and just enjoy life.

Some of the establishments you’ll find along Istiklal Street include a mix of local and global/chain restaurants, boutiques, food carts, historic buildings, groceries and essential places like pharmacies, and even a substantially-large mall. There won’t be any risk of boredom! Starting at the Taksim Square end of the street, the path is very wide and more recognizable businesses are present, but as folks walk nearer to the street’s terminus at Galata Tower, the path narrows and more local places appear.

Safety is always a hot topic for any traveler. Despite reviews mentioning pickpocketing, I felt extremely safe when I visited (mid-morning), and despite some busy crowds, I took the precautions necessary to avoid sketchy situations. Just use common sense, and you’ll be fine.

A very slow (and cute!) trolley moves along some tram grooves on the street every ten minutes or so—just be aware of where it is, and move off the “track” when it comes. I remember hearing a calm little bell, so I think it warns you if you need to move.

If I could change one thing about this street: please consider adding additional areas for the public to sit. I use an electric wheelchair, and although I can always use my chair as a seat, having a table to eat some snacks or check my phone would make my next visit even better. Even if only small benches, installing more of any type of seating would allow for more comfort for the general public. I had to secretly use a closed restaurant’s outdoor table to eat my delicious simit, which isn’t ideal—if I had a bench or table out on the street itself, it would’ve saved me from utilizing a private table.

Thanks to the City of Istanbul for maintaining this lovely street, and I look forward to coming back and reveling in this gorgeous city! Recommended...
