I've tried this place several times for different occasions and now I think I have sufficient evidence of the quality of this place. Over a period of two months, I must admit The Abbey never let me down once. If you go early in the morning, for breakfast or brunch, I'd recommend their traditional Scottish breakfast: it is superb. If you have the chance to have lunch or dinner at this place, you will surely find great quality ingredients and a professional staff. I liked the atmosphere of the pub. Perhaps the most popular aspect of this place is that it features the possibility largest whisky selection in the city: they propose "flights" of three different types of whisky. This funny tasting is definitely worth a try, even if you're not an expert or lover! If you watch football games this is the place for your match evening with beers and mates. Although they do not have an automated booking system on their website (which may be easier for tourists), we did not have much difficulty in understanding the waitress when reserving tables by telephone. In the end, if you're looking for a great pub away from the sometimes chaotic royal mile, The Abbey is probably the best choice I could...
Read moreAMERICANS DO NOT COME HERE!! Extremely rude staff and not friendly towards tourists. My family and I came here looking for a quick bite to eat. The menu seemed great - a wide variety of burgers for the kids and a few good looking cocktails for my wife and me. Right when we entered, nobody attended to us. I went to the bar and asked if we could be seated. The pub was not busy at all. The bartender proceeded to ignore us for multiple minutes and then asked for my wife and my ID. After, we were told to “find a seat ourselves.” We then sat down at the high tables near the window. After waiting for over 15 minutes without seeing a server and with no menus, my wife went to ask for them. She was ignored at the bar (not busy at all) for almost 5 minutes until the server attended. The server then asked for my wife’s ID again. My wife said she had already been ID’d and then my wife proceeded to ask for menus to which the server said she would bring bring to the table. She never did. After waiting another 20 minutes (35 minutes total) without being served or even getting a menu, my family and I walked out. I would not recommend this place to anyone,...
Read more(Written by Brian Watt - partner) Five of us had a family meal in the Abbey last Saturday evening and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The food was great and with a varied menu which suited two vegetarians among us. Service was quick and friendly and being a long-established local pub it has a wide variety of popular beers and lagers. We go out every couple of months and tend to go to City Centre restaurants where the beer choice is very limited ! We commented the following day what good value the Abbey is - both for the meals and the alcoholic/soft drinks we were ordering. I should mention as well that the person serving us happened to hear us talking about the Snooker that was on TV that week and without any prompting on our part he had it showing on a couple of their many TVs. That was a nice touch. We all agreed we'd go back and I can highly recommend it to others, be it Edinburgh locals like ourselves or tourists...
