VERY disappointing visit to this establishment on October 23rd. Firstly the food, which is handsomely priced arrived rather tepid, with soggy fries and flavourless burger. Not the first time this has happened here... maybe becoming too successful and not trying as they did in the past.
More worrying however was the fact that I (a paying customer) was stung in the chest by a wasp. Upon looking around we found that there were intact several dozen wasp carcasses on the widow ledge with several wasp flying around. In short, there seemed to be a nest somewhere in the boxed window behind our seat.
I immediately noticed staff and told them I had to leave as I am allergic to the wasp venom. I had already started to feel rather poorly. The staff were more focussed on me paying my bill, than me getting to a place to try squeeze any venom/sting out and getting an antihistamine rather than waiting and having to be hospitalised. So apparently customer safety is not a concern.
I contacted the establishment the next day and told them again the outcome, that I didn't need hospitalisation, that I was able to control the symptoms with 2 antihistamine which then knocked me out - and was forced to cancel my plans for the evening, including the loss of a theatre ticket.
I asked for senior management to contact me so as to reach a suitable resolution, as clearly someone hadn't been doing their jobs (i.e. cleaner not checking all corners/windows). So far nothing has been done.
Poor work all round for The Southern ... two thumbs down,

Read moreI've visited this bar in it's many forms throughout the years, biker bar, sports bar, student bar and now trendy food venue. This is it's most pleasant and successful transformation to date. The decor is fresh and still cosy with wood burners, knick knacks and oil lamps. They have lots of nice imported ales - the same as Holyrood 9A and although these are expensive it's nice to try these draft rather than in bottles from an off licence. The menu is focused on burgers but they also do a cracking cooked breakfast and there are one or two lighter options. The service has always been pretty good when I've been in but can be a little hit and miss. Overall a nice pub for food and drinks and much nicer than in the old days when all you got was a...
Read moreGreat pub in Newington featuring loads of craft beers and AMAZING burgers!
Really nice atmosphere and never crazily busy, the staff have always been polite and friendly and ready to give any advice on which beer is right for you! They also have a pretty good selection of wines and an extensive spirit selection.
The decor is nice and the place generally feels really warm and laid back. The prices are reasonable but not cheap, however the food is definitely worth it, they do a great selection of meat and veggie burgers and delicious sweet potato fries, I must admit my eyes have only seen the burgers section of the menu because they're just so good however they also do hot dogs and salads.
Great place if you want a decent pint and a damn...
