Beaitiful Church & Grounds St Mary's Church has a lot of personal history for my family. It was here that my parents were married and my siblings and I were christened. However, it must be decades since I last visited this historic building. I visited the church for a talk on cetaceans around Scarborough which was very interesting, but it was the church and its grounds that stole the show. A beautiful building with interesting graveyard containing lots of very old gravestones. The most popular of the graves is Anne Bronte's. The gardens are well kept and contain some pretty flowers. The church has a cafe too.

The church of St Mary dates from 1150. It is believed to have been built by the masons that were employed by the castle and whether this is true or not what is certain is that it is the place where they would have worshiped. Sadly, the church suffered severe damage during the English Civil War when it was used as parliamentary base for the troops to launch attack on the castle. All of the original stained glass windows were destroyed during the English Civil War and the windows that we see today are all 19th and 20th century replicas. Refreshments on offer when we called in and extremely helpful volunteers.

Beautiful local church with Anne Bronte's grave in the grounds. Visited on a very sunny day and worth the walk from the north side as the views from the church over Scarborough were great. This church offers cakes and refreshments (and the cakes looked so good) but we had sadly already eaten. Informative information regarding Anne's death in the church and so glad we visited as we both found it delightful and as a family member had recently passed it was a lovely place to reflect and light a candle in their memory. Thank you St Mary's Church.

If I could leave this review with no stars I absolutley would. My family has a plot at St Mary's church and I went up to tidy the resting place up and I had been informed of the flowers getting stolen from graves up there and when I got there a bunch of flowers and some artificial flowers had gone I went into the church to speak to the staff and they were so rude and sat there drinking there tea and shrugging there shoulders at me and said what do you want us to do about it I stated I am just making you aware about the situation. I am utterly so dissapointed about how rude the staff were my grandmother also went in and complained but they were rude to her as well! Me and my family have gave a fair amount of money to the church with donations when family have died and everytime we have been in wr have give donations. I have also tried to contact st marys parish house and had no joy ive left voicemails but no call back I am disgusted with the way the staff treated me and my family its absolutley...

did a ghost box session to see if anything was there and we got responses about a virus and something about polio, stuff about tide coming in, some stuff about boats as well as something about mandarin what ever that is and a ghost of henry who ever that is and some mans voice saying if we could hear him to stop the dogs pooing everywhere wasn't the word poo but i won't put it here.

all the ghosts had accents men and women they even used our voices when we said stuff it didn't sound like us it was them and said totally different to what we was saying at the time. it was really interesting and the ghosts at the end said they hope to see us again. we found all of this very interesting as it was our first time at this place and we don't know anything about it except that anne bronte is apparently there but she didn't come through on the ghost box...
