We went there about 7 years ago (when we last came to Scarborough) but the pub was in between changing management so although it was comfortable, there weren't many people so, it was lacking in atmosphere. We decided to try it again this year as we were staying nearby. WHAT A PLEASANT SURPRISE! Rather than the empty pub we visited 7 years ago, this time there were a few people chatting. There was a lovely warm and welcoming atmosphere (I suppose the Christmas decorations helped ;)), so we decided to stay and have a meal. Two of us opted for the steak/ale pie and the other person chose the chicken curry. The plates arrived warm, the pie was served with separate vegetables (in a hot dish) and a jug of gravy. The chicken curry filled the plate it came in, served with rice and a lovely plain nan. The curry sauce was mild but you could taste the tasty spice. The pie was absolutely delicious. It was packed full of tender meat/steak, there was hardly any room for any ale or gravy! The chicken curry was also very good, the chicken was perfectly cooked, moist. The real ale was also good (I can't recall what was on) but it was enjoyed. It was also good to be served wine from a proper bottle rather than a small 175ml bottle, though some pubs prefer to serve the smaller bottles as they may not be able sell a whole 75cl bottle due to lack of demand for wine in their establishment. All in all, it was such a good meal that we decided we would come back, we did so on our last night in Scarborough. We had the steak/ale pie, the chicken curry and the parma chicken. Once again, all these were perfectly cooked. The staff were friendly and made you feel welcome. I went on a bit with my review but this pub deserves it. Happy New Year to everyone at the Scarborough Arms and thank you, we will come back when in...
Read moreWe came here a while back and ordered food. We ordered a burger and chips and my girlfriend ordered a pulled pork sandwich and chips. Unfortunately, my girlfriend ended up swallowing a piece of plastic and found a huge chunk more in her sandwich. I took this to the barmaid who got the manager who said 'all I can do is apologise' and walked off.
She came back a little later and said she had investigated and found that the pulled pork is kept in plastic and frozen, something which seemed bizarre to admit to two new customers. She said the plastic probably came for that and said sorry again and again walked off. In disbelief, I couldn't believe she let us sit there with a sandwich that my girlfriend had just found plastic in.
Some 20 minutes later, she finally returned after she could see that I was irate having neither of us touched our dinner that she offered a refund. It seems only basic decency of an establishment that the manager offers a refund straight away, and not 20 minutes after a piece of plastic is swallowed by a customer due to chef negligence. Ridiculous. Will...
Read moreBooked for 10 and they were very organises when we arrived. The young staff were very polite and attentive. We all had the Sunday lunch at 12.95 a head, choice of beef, turkey or pork (I think). We didn't have to wait long for dinner to arrive, nice and hot. Several large bowls of fresh veg were places at each end of the table, and bowls of potatoes although there were roast on our plates with the meat and Yorkshire. We thought it good value for money. Several of our party had dessert, the chocolate pudding was delicious as was the sticky toffee pudding. Choice of cream, ice cream and custard. The landlord and landlady were out from behind the bar, checking that everything was OK for their customers. The landlord even gave us a complementary shot which was gratefully received but entertaining as some of our older group members had never had one before! Overall I would recommend the Scarborough Arms, good food, excellent service...
