Recently stayed in York and tried twice to get a meal in Harkers the first was 18th July 18 which was actually my birthday and my partner called in earlier in the day to check if we needed to book a table but were told there was no need but would reserve us a table in the window. We arrived just before 8pm and no table had been reserved so we found a table and started to look at the menu once we had decided what we wanted to eat my partner went to the bar to order only to be told kitchen was closed! There were no signs displayed anywhere upon entering the restaurant and whilst we were looking at the menu staff were clearing nearby tables but none of them said anything about the kitchen being closed. The second occasion was Friday 20 July 18 we thought we would give Harkers another go so we sat down and again looked at the menu, my partner went to order the fish and chip meal we had both decided on but he came back to the table to tell me that they were out of fish! How does a restaurant run out of a staple ingredient such as fish? At this point we left the restaurant and went elsewhere therefore Harkers lost out on our business on 2 separate occasions and if we are ever in York again we certainly will not be eating in Harkers! Heads up everyone if you go to Harkers in York for something to eat you could well be...

Great location, fantastic interior - it looks amazing inside and outside. I pre- booked and request for a window seat was given. We loved the view. Staff were professional, welcoming and apologetic. Food choice was disappointing and let it down. We booked for 12 midday on a Sunday so lunch menus can’t be ordered from until 12 but we had to queue for 10 minutes to be told only 1 beef left but could have chicken. How do you run out of beef in ten minutes. There were not 100s of people infront of us. Clearly they had never ordered or cooked enough beef. I cook chicken at home that’s not a treat! We also couldn’t have the starters we wanted. Ran out of garlic mushrooms apparently. Get some one to buy some more mushrooms from the local shops forbgoodness sake. This is poor kitchen management. On the first weekend of the Christmas market this should have been anticipated. We had pre booked for this very reason. My husband ordered the wild boar and chorizo pie. We thought that a place that prides itself on its pies - this must be a good choice. Erm no. It barely had any meat in it and the pastry was a strange texture. He left the pastry lid. I feel just a little more forethought and organisation and I would have given it a ten out of ten. Come on Harkers -...

Have visited many times but today's experience has not been good. We came 3weeks ago after lockdown and everything was spot on, today we were asked to stand back outside in the rain while the couple in front had the track and trace explained we reentered and were asked to do the track and trace that we had already done, we were spoken to like school children as we were showing the gentleman that we had done it. We sat for 5minutes and our drinks order was taken. After twenty minutes we asked if we could order food, which was harder than expected as the guy who we asked was serving in a different area??? It's not a big pub. So can we have was quickly followed by sorry we don't have it, then on the second ask to get sorry we don't have it. Maybe when we are seated knowing that we are hear to eat a quick heads up of we are out of A, B and C would be nice. So food ordered with quite simple requests can the food come plain. On arrival food not plain and the explanation of I did ask for it to be. Why bring it if you know its wrong? So myself and my wife ate our meal whilst my Daughters was re cooked. So she ate alone. Everyone has a bad day from time to time but customers are what keeps you going without them business's...

The lady at the bar kindly gave samples of the ales and explained their differences. The interior lives up to the exterior, three large change lies, indoor pillars, nice toilets if that's your thing... and they play tasteful music not too loud. There is a small TV showing sports but it isn't the focus of the pub. Nice friendly atmosphere. I ordered the game pie afterwards which was amazing. 10 min wait if that. The pastry thick and of a high quality, the inside of the pie also flavoursome. The mash was to die for and good quality vegetables. The lady checked my food was OK, and it was perfect.

Poor service, terrible kitchen. We were seriously disappointed having read some of the reviews of which a few were positive. On arrival the table still had the previous guest's dishes on and the table itself scattered with leftovers. The service personal weren't bothered in clearing the table and we cleared this ourselves. The request for a wipe down was met with a disapproving grumble. After ordering our meals we waited an hour and then received a portion of charcoal. To be fair, we were offered a refund but only after requesting more than once. We won't be back anytime soon.

We stopped by this lovely, charming restaurant during a recent day trip to York for a bite to eat on a busy Saturday lunchtime. The restaurant was clean, airy, and nicely decorated with period features. There was ample seating both inside and out. We were served immediately and were attended to by lovely, friendly, and very attentive staff. The soup was absolutely delicious and was served nice and hot with soft bread and lots of softened butter. Two added bonuses to this restaurant wad they served non-alcoholic beers and was dog-friendly.
