History of Old Town Albuquerque

Old Town Albuquerque is the historic heart of the city, founded in 1706 when a group of Spanish families settled along the banks of the Rio Grande. They established the area as a Spanish colonial outpost, naming it La Villa de Alburquerque, in honor of the Duke of Alburquerque in Spain (the extra ā€œrā€ was later dropped from the name).

The layout of Old Town followed the traditional Spanish plaza model, with a central square surrounded by adobe homes, government buildings, and the San Felipe de Neri Church, which was completed in 1793 and still stands today as one of the oldest buildings in Albuquerque.

During the 19th century, Old Town served as an important stop along the El Camino Real and later the Santa Fe Trail, linking Mexico with the northern territories. After the arrival of the railroad in the 1880s, economic activity shifted eastward, and Old Town became more of a cultural and historical center than a commercial hub.

Fun facts: • Some buildings in Old Town have walls over 3 feet thick, made of traditional adobe. • The plaza has been continuously used for over 300 years for festivals, markets, and community gatherings. • Many of the current shops and galleries are housed in restored 18th- and 19th-century homes. • The area is rumored to be haunted, and ghost tours are a popular attraction for visitors.

Today, Old Town Albuquerque is a vibrant destination for locals and tourists alike, offering museums, restaurants, artisan shops, and a deep connection to New Mexico’s rich Native American, Spanish, and...

One of the highlights is the incredible food. From traditional New Mexican dishes to cozy cafĆ©s, there’s something for everyone. The flavors are rich and authentic – definitely try the local green and red chile dishes! There are also plenty of spots to relax with a coffee or enjoy a cool drink under the shade of a patio.

What makes Old Town truly special is its atmosphere. Local musicians often perform in the plaza, creating a lively yet relaxing vibe. The history here is fascinating too, with beautiful churches and museums that showcase the heritage of the area.

Whether you’re visiting for shopping, dining, history, or just to soak in the culture, Old Town Albuquerque is a must-see. It’s a place where tradition meets creativity, and you can easily spend...

The Silversmith’s House at Stay Old Town Road gave me the perfect Southwest experience. Their adobe style homes, located less than a 5 minute walk to old town Albuquerque, was the exact accommodation I wanted for my time in New Mexico. Every intricate detail was perfect, down to the coffee mugs and pillows. I already cannot wait to come back to Albuquerque and stay here again! As a solo traveler, I prioritize safety. Stay Old Town Road had locked gates, and was in a very safe neighborhood, making me feel extremely comfortable while staying there alone. #albuquerque #landofenchantment #stayoldtownroad #oldtown #oldtownalbuquerque
