I paid my 4th Quarter property in October 2024, and received a letter 3 months later January 17, 2025 stating my payment did not go through. To make matters worse, City Hall added a $40 fee, and late charge of $82.92, totaling $122.92. As a widow and the sole breadwinner of my household, this situation is both outrageous and unacceptable.
It took them 3 months to notify me of an issue, and yet they have no hesitation in adding fees and late charges. Their system clearly has flaws, as timely notification could have allowed me to correct the problem.
When I called the Finance Department, they insisted I pay the charges, claiming that I had earned interest on my money in the meantime—an absurd argument, considering the error was on their end. Their response was "We were backlogged at the end of the year." Tell me, how is that my fault!!
We already pay more than enough in property taxes without being penalized for their defective online payment system and lack of efficiency. I should have been alerted immediately, or at least within a day of the payment issue.
To put this into perspective, I haven’t missed a property tax payment in 20 years.
I asked for the matter to be escalated and requested that the Treasurer/Controller or CFO contact me directly. As of now, I haven’t heard back, but I’ll provide updates once I speak with upper management.
Update 1/29/2025: No one responded to me from City Hall. They seem to have forgotten the their salaries are paid by the taxpayers. Sending...
