The hotel itself is located in the main city on a hill so everything is visible from the hotel which makes the views spectacular. We were able to walk downtown in roughly 15 minutes around 4pm and felt safe (We're in our late 30s so I wouldn't recommend an older person trying to walk it because you have to walk down a steep hill). Lots of shops and restaurants nearby so it is a prime location, especially if you rent a car and can drive to other locations like beaches.
The rooms are really nice and supposedly recently renovated. It's equipped with a full size fridge, coffee maker, two burners, and a few dishes. Nicely air conditioned when you want to escape the heat. All rooms have a balcony with great views. Bathroom was super clean and furnished with toiletry items and pool towels. Make sure to ask for a room that is on the 2nd floor or above in Villa building 2. This one has the best views (pictures of the city below are mostly from the room view). Sunsets were beautiful!
The grounds are pretty well-maintained with flowers and it has chickens and roosters. I like hearing the roosters crow but if you're not fond of them, they are all over the island and you'll hear them. Parking is in abundance and you'll have no issues. Laundry machines are also on-site but could not locate an ice machine. They have a small gym and there are elevators in the villas to get you from ground floor to 4th floor if you don't want to use the stairs.
They have two restaurants, which are in the same vicinity with great views. One is for nicer occasions (actual clothes, not swimsuits) and the other is a bar that serves food (including breakfast) beside the pool. Food is pricey in St. Thomas so expect to spend about $20 a person for each meal. I paid $10 for a SIDE salad and $17 for an omelet.
They have a small store that sells souvenirs, beer, wine, liquor, sodas, coffees, breakfast sandwiches, toiletry items, etc. on the grounds beside the front office. It's super convenient but again, pricey - sun lotion was $30 and I was grateful I had brought my own.
The castle is a small structure in the middle of the property with rooms built next to it that was neat to look at but nothing crazy.
As far as friendliness of the hotel staff goes, it's like anywhere else - some are nice and friendly and some aren't. When we checked in, the receptionists weren't rude but more matter-of- fact and explained everything, gave directions, times the stores and restaurants were open, etc. Restaurant server was super nice and told us where to go for fun, etc. Bartender just did her job and nothing extra - no small talk.
The island has beautiful scenery and is neat to see but keep in mind that it has poverty and people will try to hustle you in certain parts - somewhat aggravate you to buy things. I've traveled extensively, especially in the Caribbean, and it's similar to the other countries. Hull Bay Beach and Magen's Bay Beach were the best - We went to Coki Beach but it's not what I'd call "family oriented" so we didn't stick around but some might enjoy it. Most beaches require entry fee of $5 per person and $2 for parking. Military gets free parking but still has to pay entry fee. They also drive on the wrong side of the road but driver's seats are still on the left side of the car. Roads have a lot of pot holes and are uneven and you'll go up and down mountains/ hills - the 4 cylinder car we rented managed. Gas was $6 a gallon. You can drive around the whole island in roughly one or two hours. We visited 3 beaches in one day because they are so close to each other.
We did two excursions - night Kayaking in the Mangrove which was cool (paid $125 plus tip to guide for 2 people for 2 hours) and went on a boat ride to turtle cay for snorkeling (3 hours for $170 for 2 people). We had a great time and enjoyed visiting. Most people visit St. Thomas more than once, especially since you don't need a passport if youre a US citizen; I will most likely not just because it's so similar to other places I've been and didn't have anything super...
Read moreMy hubby and I did not have the best time here at St. Thomas. Our interactions with the staff here at this hotel almost made me check in at another hotel. We chose St. Thomas and this hotel to celebrate our 26th wedding anniversary at. We were excited to go to this island bc we never been before. The girl at the check in desk, gave us a form to sign that state we could not sue the hotel if we are hurt given a lot of this hotel has been damaged in the hurricane. This hotel still have a lot of abandon buildings due to the hurricane. A few buildings have been renovated and rebuilt. She did not go into further details about the structure of the building that made me feel comfortable.
I asked to see the room she said I couldn't see the room without signing the waver. She was rude and not very accommodating to someone who was obviously concerned about the structure of the building. My hubby said, Go ahead and sign the form so we can see the room and if we did not like it we could check out. We later met Justin the go cart driver who took us to our room who was super nice and gave us so much information which made us feel so much safer. The ladies who work in the conveyance store on the hotel campus was rude and not helpful at all. My hubby asked her a question and she never turned around and looked at him.
The workers talk amongst themselves and leave the guest there standing until they get to them. The cab drivers are not all friendly, All of the staff right up the street that book the Ferry's and Sea planes were rude and act as though we were bothering them. We wanted to go to St. Croix there was only 1 plane leaving that day at 3:20pm, the front desk girl never told us that the return of that plane comes back the next day. If we didn't ask we would have been stuck. She knew we were tourist bc we were asking questions, 3 of them there was short, mean, made rude faces and just make us feel so bad. The hotels here do not sit on a beach, its all up hill. The beached in St. John are nice but there were no cabana seating, with hotel restaurants that cater to you. Very basic beached with pretty views.
At this point I had enough, I just wanted to get back home. St. Thomas was a bad experience for us. We will not be returning. If this is your 1st time coming, I would not advise. Go...
Read moreI spent 5 days and 4 nights at this resort. From the outside appearance, this resort looks aged and in need of being modernized. The staff, rooms, and the spectacular seaside views are truly the golden key to this resort.
The day before check-in, I called the resort to see if an early check-in was possible; check in is at 4:00 pm, and flight was arriving at 1:12 pm. I was told that I needed to check with them once I arrived to see if my room was ready. Upon arrival to St. Thomas, I went to the resort to see if by chance the room was ready or would be ready before 4 pm. The staff on duty at the lobby was friendly and professional. The room wasn’t ready yet but she did my pre-check in paperwork and said that she would call when it’s ready, and all I would need to do when I returned was pick up my key. I never received a call. I returned to the resort at 3:45 pm. The original staff member was not there but another staff member looked up my information and provided me with the key and room information. She was very helpful, cheerful, and professional.
My room was on the 3rd floor of the Hilltop Villas. My room was clean, spacious, appealing, and had a tropical/island feel to it. It had a big balcony with a fantastic seaside view. There’s a kitchenette with a standard size refrigerator, microwave, and stove top. The cabinets were packed with pots, pans, dishes, and utensils. My king size bed was so soft and extremely comfortable.
I ate at The Castle Grill twice. Once for lunch, and the other for dinner. I also ordered occasional drinks. The food was good but could’ve been more flavorful. The alcoholic drinks could’ve been better.
I was looking forward to karaoke night on the Tuesday, but it got canceled. The live band on the Wednesday night was great! I danced a lot and had a wonderful time.
The pool and hot tub were clean and looked inviting, but I did not use the pool or the hot tub during this visit. I went to a nearby beach instead.
Overall, I enjoyed my stay at Bluebeards Castle Hotel/Resort and will...
