If youâre in Chattanooga and looking for a fun, nostalgic, and downright delicious stop during your downtown adventure, the MoonPie General Store located inside the Southern Belle Riverboat gift shop is a hidden treasure that absolutely delivers. This store-in-store concept is a brilliant expansion of the iconic MoonPie brand â and itâs one of the most charming experiences youâll find along the riverfront.
From the moment you step inside, youâre greeted with that sweet Southern hospitality and a display of MoonPie magic that brings out the kid in everyone. Itâs a perfect pairing: the charm of old-fashioned treats with the beauty of Chattanoogaâs scenic riverfront.
Customer service was absolutely top-tier. The staff working the gift shop are friendly, helpful, and clearly passionate about what they do. They made some fantastic recommendations and even let us try a MoonPie Coffee sample â yes, you read that right â MoonPie Coffee! It was smooth, chocolatey, and exactly the kind of creative twist that makes this store feel fresh while still rooted in tradition.
As a long-time visitor to Chattanooga, I have to say: this store-in-store concept is a brilliant idea and incredibly well-executed.    Read moreThe list of what I hated is long. The website, which we used to determine if we wanted to go there for ice cream, did not say it was take- out only. When we arrived, the social distancing rules were on a sandwich board literally blocking the entrance. Stationed at the sign was a frowning employee glaring at us. There were 9 of us--5 adults, 1 teen, 3 little boys under age 8 and all of us properly masked-- and we had to get permission to enter, which was grudgingly granted. The employees did not welcome us. The three of them made us feel like we were a major inconvenience. One of the children needed a restroom, but their's was closed to the public-- I can understand to some degree, but the place serves beverages and ice cream. The child was taken by his parent two shops down to the pinball arcade, where they graciously opened their restroom to a child. At no time did any employee of Moonpie General store offer assistance or guidance on their very expensive merchandise. But one did watch me suspiciously from where she was stocking and straitening a shelf as i perused the sale section. Additionally, there was no seating inside or out-- how they expected people to want to buy sundaes without being able to sit and eat them, I don't know, especially as this store is downtown and caters to tourists and daytrippers. The three boys ended up perched on a wooden display case eating their ice cream cones while the shakes and malts were being made. The chocolate malts ordered by the adults were not properly mixed, so all the malt was at the bottom. Interestingly, when we left, the same frowning employee who "greeted" us stood guard by the door--whether deciding if we were thieves, or making sure we didn't try to rush back inside, I dont know. While the employees claimed they could not place any of their metal chairs outside, (they were all stacked under the front window) we were able to walk half a block and sit at the tables in front of the glass blowing shop. Also, other restaurants had their chairs and tables outside for patrons, such as Fuve Guys and the cupcakes shop. If you like moonpies, save yourself some money and go to the grocery store. Same selection as their general store, but better prices, and if I have to guess, much nicer, friendlier employees. No wonder we were the only people in the store. I am only giving them one star because I have to give them something to complete my review--they don't deserve the one I'm...
