A poor imitation of Get Up & Go Kayaking.
Update: Please note, my name is really Michael R. Honcho. Not my fault or doing that the driver in Talledega Nights was given the same name. There are about 20 other M. Honchos. Our tickets for this attraction were purchased on my wives credit card ending 4671 Visa through Viatour. June 24th. Google may reach me for a copy of my Visa billing statement.
Booked tour thru Viator as Clear Kayaking through Clearwater. Only to later learn the other name this outfit uses is Sea Glass Kayaking. Confusing? Yes. Especially when we first went to the Fairfield Inn. The nice lady at the front desk explained we should go to a near by public boat launch next to the library. It's not Get Up & Go Kayaking? I had assumed incorrectly. But the photo used in their advertising is so similar, it's deceptive.
We went with Get up and Go our last visit. That was the Shell Key location. Knowing Get up and Go has multiple locations it's my fault for assuming Clear Kayaking through Clearwater was a Get up and Go location. Kind of felt duped.
Ok. We already paid, and we are here. Despite our visit to Fairfield Hotel we are still on time. The guide should be here, but maybe is caught up in traffic. I called the phone to Sea Glass Kayaking only to get voicemail. Just as we were about to leave arrives John, who we learn will be our guide. He apologized for his employee not being able to make it. No big deal, but let's get going.
After unloading the kayaks and preparing to go. My wife slipped on the slippery slope of the boat launch. Embarrassed but okay. There is nowhere except the bottom to store things you brought. An extra t shirt. Towel, sunscreen and my Nikon. I was not going to risk my $1,700 digital SLR so put it back in our car.
You launch directly into the main boating channel. Then continue in the main boating channel all the way. There was near constant boats giving us a roller coaster ride and we were flipped off by some jet ski guy. "Get out of the channel you f in idiots! Hey, we are following the guide. We had to share a double. No option for single kayaks. Our guide used an actual kayak. Not one of these clear ones. I knew from our Get Up and Go trip that these clear kayaks kind of suck and bob you around. At Shell Key the water was calm shallow and clear. Here it was wavy from the boat wakes, deep and dark. All you see below is pea green water. We spotted 1 dolphin but nothing else.
The supposed highlight of the trip is a bird sanctuary. In my view if it's a sanctuary. Would it not be best to not intrude on the birds resting and nesting? This was also the extent of the mangroves. No mangrove tunnels here. About face and return back via the boating channel again. The tour was 1 hour and 45 minutes. Not 2 and half hours. But by now, I didn't care. Left disappointed. A poor imitation of Get up & Go. At least with them the guide has personality, and the loop route included a stop on Shell Island for shelling and a quick dip in the Gulf. What a stupid route this Clear Kayaking through the murky bay water takes you. The clear kayaks are pointless.
I think this outfit is attempting to imitate Get Up & Go Kayaking success. But fails miserably. You will see the same thing from any of the tour boat cruises out of the marina . My advice. Go someplace like Shell Key which is too shallow for boats. And the clear kayaks give you a view of the sand, sea grass and small fish. The clear kayaks have a purpose at that location. Not here. Just a gimmick to sell you on...
Read moreOur guide Alicia was nice and the first half of the tour was ok. It takes time to learn how to row correctly. It was me, my wife, my 7 year old son and 11 year old daughter. My wife was with my daughter and they had a hard time rowing at first but then she got better. The second half was not good because it started raining and the wind really picked up. We are lucky we didn’t flip the kayak. My wife had really hard time making it back to the dock so I had to jump in the water and help her by pulling the boat after I had docked my kayak. The wind was so strong that her kayak kept getting slammed against the wall. There was also another group on the tour, 2 girls and they never made it back, I hope they are ok. Alicia had to ask some guys by the docking station that had jet skis if they can go look for them. We couldn’t see them anymore so who knows what happened to them. Im so glad we made it to the docking station. Not a good idea to go kayaking if it’s going to be raining or windy. The wind will pull you...
