The Soldiers National Monument is one of the first monuments dedicated on the Gettysburg battlefield, being dedicated on July 1st 1869 by General George Meade who commanded the Army of the Potomac at the battle. The marble statues around the base of the monument represent History, War, Peace and Plenty. The figure of the Genius of Liberty stands on top of the monument. She holds a sword in one hand and the wreath of peace in the other, representing the constant struggle for freedom.

A humbling location steeped in history, quiet and tranquil, only a short walk away from the park entrance and parking lot but hidden behind a privacy fence and beautifully maintained landscaping as to avoid being disrespectful or gaudy. The professional tour guides who sweep through the area with groups of people in tow definitely know their material, and this is a must-see for any scholar of American military history and/or Abe Lincoln’s life and legacy.

This is a very beautiful memorial inside the national cemetery. The ceremony on the anniversary of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, November 19 was especially meaningful and moving. If you come that weekend, you can tour the cemetery at night with luminaries lighting the way. There are re-enactments and people dressed in period clothes walking around. It’s like stepping back in time.

This is one of the most incredible places I've EVER been in my life!! Cold chills up and down your spine arohnd every corner. Ive always been intrigued by the CIVIL WAR. BUT, to stand in the exact spot when the largest .number of NORTH CAROLINIANS lost their lives in 3 days more than any other conflict in history....is just bone shaking. You can just actually feel the heaviness in air..even now, 154 yrs later. UNREAL!! Look forward to more battle field...
