The John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial is a monument to United States President John Fitzgerald Kennedy in the West End Historic District of downtown Dallas, Texas erected in 1970, and designed by noted architect Philip Johnson. Address: 646 Main St, Dallas, TX 75202 Hours: Open 24 hours Part of: Dealey Plaza Historic District (#93001607); Westend Historic District (#78002918); Designated NHLDCP: April 19, 1993 Architect: Philip Johnson
Philip Johnson's design is a cenotaph, or empty tomb, that symbolizes the freedom of Kennedy's spirit. The memorial is a square, roofless room, 30 feet (9.1 m) tall and 50 by 50 feet (15 by 15 m) square with two narrow openings facing north and south. The walls consist of 72 white precast concrete columns, most of which end 29 inches (740 mm) above the earth. Eight columns (two in each corner) extend to the ground, acting as legs that support the monument.[8] Each column ends in a light fixture. At night, the lights create the illusion that the structure is supported by the light itself. The corners and "doors" of this roofless room are decorated with rows of concrete circles, or medallions, each identical and perfectly aligned. These decorations introduce the circular shape into the square architecture of the Kennedy Memorial.
The cenotaph lies atop a low concrete hill, embossed with squares and slightly elevated compared to street level. Inside is a low block of dark granite, 8 feet (2.4 m) square, set into a larger shallow depression. The granite square is decorated on its north and south faces with the name "John Fitzgerald Kennedy" carved in gold letters. It is too empty to be a base, too short to be a table, but too square to be a tomb. The letters have been painted gold to capture the light from the white floating column walls and the pale concrete floor. These words – three words of a famous name – are the only verbal messages in...
Read moreEerie to go here and look onto the scene where JFK lost his life. Do pay for parking we went on a Sunday afternoon it wasn't packed downtown and we were the only car in the parking lot. We paid 10 dollars to park, put the receipt on our dash and felt like that would be better than coming back and finding a boot on our car. We parked and proceeded to walk around Dealey Plaza. There are lots of plaques and markers pointing out various points of interest including the spot where Abraham Zupruder was filming Kennedy to the more obscure monuments that mark other important people and events that pertain to the city itself. There is a museum in the school book depository with an adjacent parking lot. The museum was closed when we were there but I plan on revisiting to take a tour. I wasn't surprised by how many people were there doing the same thing even though there were no other crowds in the downtown area. We walled around to the Big red courthouse and saw the log cabin that sits to the side of Big Red. The JFK memorial there is a great place to visit i found it immensely vast and empty with a single large black granite slab in the center with his name in larger gold letters etched in the side. Wether your a history nut, or a conspiracy nut this place is something to experience. Look for two large white X marks in the street go stand there. When you can look behind you at the school book depository and try not to...
