I love the space and the stage but this has turned into a challenging performance location due to the noise. Even the artists commented on it onstage. The stage area catches all the traffic sounds bouncing off the buildings nearby.
Covid restrictions have reduced concession options to a minimum. Don't expect much more than movie theater style packaged candy, and you can't bring anything in. Pre-show dining is the best plan.
There is a small bar in one corner where people can purchase mixed drinks but wine and beer options are very limited. Thank goodness for the one Deep Ellum Brewery option.
Five stars for the space, tucked in next to the Winspear. Paid parking is available in the adjacent garage and there are lots within a block.
Five stars for the quality of performers booked into the venue.
Two stars for the location next to Woodall Rogers. It is such a relief when traffic finally dies down ... sometime after 11 PM on a weeknight. And the cooler air on the lawn when the sun goes down is really nice.
Four stars overall because I love Strauss Square ... in spite...
Read moreJust saw The Mavericks play there, who were, as always, amazing! I moved here from LA a few years back, and I have never heard of this venue. Wow, it is so beautiful! I'm used to venues like the Hollywood Bowl, The Greek Theatre, The John Anson Ford Theatre(all outdoors) which are beautiful spaces to see an artist or event. Even Jerry Dale McFadden from The Mavericks loved the venue! It's totally modern, great sound, intimate because of it's more narrow rectangular shape but deep. There was a half seated section and behind non-seated. All kinds of beautiful greenery. I hope there are some other bands I love that play there in spring/fall. I am an alternative rock chick myself. Or what about Bill Maher? My favorite TV show. I saw him play The Pavilion in Irving here, and I've never heard such hysterical laughter from a totally sold out crowd. Laughter...

This intimate, open-air venue is one of the rare few where you can BYOB — including alcoholic beverages (as long as coolers are soft-sided and no larger than 16"). All patrons, including those on the gently sloping tiered lawn, enjoy excellent views of the stage. Acoustics are surprisingly good given the proximity to Woodall Rodgers Freeway. Spectacular skyline views from within the downtown Dallas Arts District are a bonus. Get everything you need for a picnic — including wine, cheese, and fresh fruit — from the 7-Eleven in...
