The exhibits in this place look wonderful. The employees at the front desk however need some inclusivity training. Our experience made me wish i could have received a refund one our donation.
I have two suggestions for the museum:
Don't place trinkets for kids at their eye level. My toddler saw a small toy (read choking hazard) and in two seconds had it in their mouth. It is not safe to let small children walk in here as the gift shop is first thing you run into and choking hazards are within reach. All us mamas are tired from trying to keep our kiddos safe all day, we could really use help from places not displaying attractive choking hazards at lil kid level height.
I have an ND child. I know their stimming or vocalization isn't appealing to everyone, and I know some uneducated people think this behaviour is misbehaving. When we visited, we had family go ahead and make sure the museum wasn't too busy so we could include my kiddo in our adventure. The person behind the counter was displeased and annoyed the minute she saw us struggling to find a way to make my kiddo comfortable exploring the museum. When I had to buy said toy mentioned above, she was curt and unpleasant with us. When we were done with the transaction, I noticed another family had entered, so I decided to leave with my kiddo so we wouldn't bother their experience. As we left I heard the desk clerk say something very negative and hurtful about my child. I strongly suggest that the museum director look into diversity training for every employee, because belittling a child with a neurological disorder is pretty low.
As a long time homeschooler here in WA, i've seen an increase in the number of families with special needs kiddos homeschooling now. Most of us that have been homeschooling a while have been recommending the small, local museums as "history" curriculum. One of our goals is to visit all the museums in WA. Based on our experience here though, we may have...
Read moreWhat a wonderful museum. There are a wide variety of rooms and displays, all done very well. A room with some terrific antique vehicles. Artifacts from different wars, firearms, Native American arts, neon light display, petrified wood. Lots of various antiques. The place was incredibly clean and maintained. Very friendly and helpful staff. We thought we might spend an hour and ended up being there almost three hours. A great place for adults or kids. There is no entry fee, but when you leave, I bet you'll gladly contribute to the donation jar. I would drive fifty miles out of my way to visit a...
Read moreI love to do road trips where one stays off the interstates, wanders through the small towns, and hit every small local museum one can find. The Kittitas County Historical Museum is a great example of why I so enjoy these adventures. These museums tell a local story, unique and individual, but at the same time they tell the story of America. And one just never knows what one might find. This museum had a fine collection of a huge variety of items. We had a blast exploring that and I took a ton of pictures. I will include as many with this review as Google...
