Read moreFREE, HIDDEN GEM! Most people drive by this museum or miss key parts while visiting, so I'll give some pointers: There's nice gift shop with souvenirs and gifts for people of any age (located at the entrance of the museum.) The second floor has three big exhibition rooms showing the history of the station AND a door that opens to the outside exhibits. There's an amazing 40ft long scale model of the Baltimore - Ohio railroad in the Freight House (the building you'll see after exiting the second floor exhibits.) The train track model was built in the seventies to represent in detail the first 13 miles of railroad in the US. The Caboose is open to the public and its story can be heard by pressing a button. Guided tours are usually offered on Saturdays (~2pm.)
I'd recommend this museum to anybody who's interested in history or trains/machines. Young kids like looking at the train model and playing pretend in the caboose. You can have a fun, memorable experience in...
Read moreThis is a great place around the hidays for kids. There were several model train layouts with two done in Legos exclusively. The others were G scale, N gauge, and O scale with a Thomas the Tank Engine theme complete with Thomas episodes running. Beyond all of that is the history of Maryland's train station. Plenty of artifacts and displays to please the history buff and rail fan. The museum features an HO scale layout of the line from Baltimore to EC that is quite interesting and informative. Top off the visit with the caboose and wait for a real train to thunder by. The only drawback is that the museum caters a bit too much to children. The adult railfan will enjoy a visit but will need to navigate past the rather youth centered ambiance. The gift shop is mostly toys and trinkets for the tots. The railroad viewing is sonewhat limited be the fence and bench positions. Best viewing is up the tracks from the museum where you can get better angles as the trains swing by...
