WORST LIBRARY IN COLORADO. It's not because their DVD collection is overloaded with British mystery series, and lacks modern American series. It's not because their staff members ignore you when you need something, while they have long conversations amongst themselves. It's not because the patrons are comprised of light-rail travelers / indigents /"bums"/ mentally ill/ chemically impaired. It's how the staff ESCALATES situational events by involving security or "undercover", overzealous, Englewood PD officers. How can a mentally ill man smoking & talking nonsense in a bathroom become an EVENT? Just ask the Englewood library staff & the Englewood police department.... Do they really think that a mentally ill man is going to pay for a smoking ticket they took the time to write? He was sick - he was most likely a schizo off his meds - or he was chemically altered by drug or drink. He forgot where he left his backpack- he' s not " with it", so writing him a ticket is fruitless. Silly cops. Why couldn't they help him gather his belongings & get him some medical help or get him to MOVE ON out of the library??? Why does the security guard bother to call the cops (even if he was talking nonsense about " snipers" it was evident he was harmless). How come the staff can't recognize a non-violent sick person? Ridiculous. They can make a mountain from a molehill, but they can't provide a safe & serene place for a tax payer like me to spend a few minutes in the afternoon. Every time I think I'll have a better experience there, it gets worse. Every time I go over there are teens talking loudly, or some patron is cussing or losing control, or a patron is playing their phone or computer too loud, and the staff does nothing to damper it. Why can't the staff / security guard talk calmly & quietly to perpetrators of their rules? Instead of escalating interactions they need to learn to CALMLY & QUIETLY move it outside, or at least to a corner -or a room out of the way. Why make a scene out in the open? Why do all the patrons have to be disturbed by a single patron and the staff that's interacting with them? I think the staff & the police were making more noise than their poor "perp". They gave the episode way too much attention and made it so much bigger than it needed to be. Another botched visit to that wretched library. Manager John Soloman (sp?)and his staff need to figure out how to deescalate interactions WITHOUT involving the police and WITHOUT disrupting & upsetting other patrons that are visiting. After today I'll mainly visit Littleton & Denver libraries which all have a much better feel than Englewood library has. Not comfortable nor fun at Englewood - AT ALL. No more chances for Englewood Library from me. One gold star for city center location, parking, & light rail access, but don't recommend trying to study or spend a quiet block...
Read moreI hate to write a bad review about a library, but I just want to be honest. I have spent countless hours studying in libraries, so I think I have a good idea of what should be expected. First, this library is quite small, therefore there are limited places to study. Second, if you need peace and quiet, this library is not the place to go. There seems to be very little to possibly no acoustics at all in this library. Sound travels through the halls like an echo in a cave. To make matters worse, I really do not believe that anyone enforces sound control. What happened to libraries being quiet places to read and study? Almost every time I am at this library I have to either move to another available desk or just leave because someone is being too loud and disruptive. I have even noticed that some of the faculty do not seem to even try to be quiet when shelving books or talking with visitors. It's extremely frustrating! The study rooms are great because they block out most of the noise, but we are only allowed to reserve one two-hour session per day, and believe me, they monitor the time. Third, I hate to sound discriminatory, but there are always "shady" people there. I'm not just talking bout the homeless people who seem to frequent this library, I'm talking about those weirdos who walk by your table and take inventory of all of your belongings. Or like the weirdo that decided to sit down next to me the other day, even though he saw that I was extremely focused on my work, and proceeded to discuss his recent visit to the strip club. It almost seemed like he made it a point to project his voice for whatever reason. I know other people and probably the staff could hear him, yet nothing was done about it. Fourth, the hours are not very convenient. They close at 5 pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They also open at 10 am every day except for Sunday, when they open at 1 pm. The last thing I would like to say is that some staff members seem to be friendlier and more helpful than others. I do have to admit that one staff member, a younger gentlemen, was quite condescending and rude to to me. I hope they have the chance to improve this library. Libraries should be quiet places of sanctuary for those seeking knowledge...
Read moreThe Library staff is missing the ball on this at bat. A library is supposed to be a place where a member of our community can come for peace and quiet. To read, be on the computer, or just sit and be able to collect your thoughts. The cleaning lady is SO LOUD!! She would be fired anywhere else for creating so much unneeded noise. She slams this vintage 1971 style dust pan around with absolutely no regards to the profound amount of noise she is producing. I am almost positive she is doing it on purpose. If I had another option as to a library to go to. I would, the staff talk across the Library freely as if they are at the flee market or outside at a rock concert. Like, they too are trying to be loud and have no regard to noise level. FYI Library workers: The place you work is NOT just a building that holds books and computers. With all do respect to you all. Please get your library under control by leading by example and bring it down a decible or two. This is a problem, a big problem! Now, people are using their phones and talking at full volume, 2 days ago, I swear on my life someone started playing a radio out loud and no one said a word. It wasn't until I let out a very loud SHHHHHHHH!!!! Did some order finally get restored. I value my local Library, I always have since I was a child. It's an institution where, we as local citizens go to gain knowledge, understanding, instruction and entertainment through the books, computers, film, wi-fi, and many other ways a library has to provide such. It's a safe-place by design. It's also a QUIET PLACE!! I will help by providing my extremely loud SHHHHHHH!! To the point of embarrassment, because I want to embarrass you! You should be ashamed of being so loud! Who raised you people? Gain some coolth, will you? Just my thoughts in agreeance with no less than 10 other reviews on Google. A proud Englewood resident! Let's keep our Library...
