I want to preface this by saying this was about as uncomfortable and scammy as buying a used car. Watch out - buyer beware.
First off, the store had a closeout sign which is ridiculous because this is a common sales tactic all furniture stores use.
Went in to buy two twin mattresses - one for each of our kids. I explained we wanted to take them home today.
The salesman discussed that he could make a deal on the floor models. One of them was $359 and the other $399. Iâm certain he told me he could do $300 for each one, but then he said $300 for one and $350 for the other. Iâd normally give a person the benefit of the doubt, but not in this case given what happened next.
He told us that he would throw in new sheets. Somehow take the price off on the mattress. I thanked him and figured he knew what he was doing with the computer to give us the deal he had mentioned.
Then he was talking about also including mattress protective covers and proceeded to let my wife pick them out.
Seemed like a really good deal, good customer service, no complaints - so far.
Then the bill came out to $913. I paid it, and then realized that things didnât add up. He said that one of the mattresses was new and was more than the floor model. This is after we already agreed on pricing of the floor model.
He proceeded to explain things in an illogical fashion and his numbers certainly didnât add up to those items being included. Sending a scam, I told him it sounded like used car math.
Realizing his dishonesty, I insisted on a refund. He seemed annoyed and shocked - not apologetic. He had to call another store to talk with someone to figure out how to do a refund.
I was at the counter the whole time and could hear the other end of the cell phone call and the other man talking. He was instructing our salesman how to continue to explain and double talk to get the sale and not do a refund.
I said loudly, so the man in the other end of the phone could hear me, âI can hear what youâre saying. Every word.â
Our salesman reiterated to the man on the other end of the phone, that I had heard everything and his response was akin to saying âfantasticâŠâ in a sarcastic tone. At that point he instructed our salesman how to process the refund.
This phone call probably took close to twenty or thirty minutes to finally get the refund.
Then, he rang up the two floor models for the agreed upon price, and kept the sheets. Btw - we got better sheets and covers on Amazon later that day for less. At that point, I wouldnât have cared if they were more, it was just the lying and cheating - upselling without disclosure. Totally dishonest.
The only reason why I didnât walk was because the mattresses were comfortable, our daughters wanted them, and none of us wanted to deal with another store.
After this was all said and done, I looked up online common dishonest mattress sales scams, and what he pulled was a textbook case of misleading numbers, adding in additional items, and jacking up the cost.
If you go here, keep alert, bring a calculator, stay vigilant.
Hereâs what my research found via an online AI search for mattress sales scams:
âItâs not a widespread or well-documented scam for mattress salespeople to specifically âadd onâ sheets as a deceptive tactic, but there are some shady practices in the mattress industry that could involve pushing extras like sheets to inflate the sale. Hereâs the deal:
Mattress sales often rely on upselling accessoriesâsheets, pillows, protectors, etc.âbecause these items have high profit margins. Salespeople might bundle sheets into a deal, claim theyâre âfreeâ or âdiscounted,â or pressure you to buy them as part of a package, making it seem like youâre getting a better value. This isnât necessarily a scam, just aggressive sales tactics. However, it can feel deceptive if the salesperson inflates the mattress price to offset âfreeâ sheets or misrepresents the quality or necessity of...
Read morecame in and bought a mattress and base last week. scheduled the delivery for next Friday (today), which they said they would be able to do no problem. i call the store today to confirm im getting the mattress delivered today, and they just now tell me that the mattress i bought was out of stock and wonât be delivered to their warehouse until today, meaning i wont get my mattress today like promised. Gayle, the store manager (or branch manager?), set up the delivery and did not say anything about the mattress being out of stock and them being unable to deliver on Friday. i had to arrange for my partner to stay at home today to receive the mattress, and all for nothing. they made zero indication that they were unable to deliver it today when i first purchased the mattress, and they had a whole week to tell me this! so i paid $100 for a scheduled delivery only for it to not happen! i am pretty upset and they have offered no compensation whatsoever :/
UPDATE: I called Monday and spoke with Gayle asking for a refund on the $100 delivery fee I paid, which she said she would speak with her manager and give me a call back within a few days. It is now Thursday and I have not received any call back. I called myself today and found out that she does not work Thursday or Friday, so the person who answered today was unable to help me. It really seems like they are doing everything they can to ignore the situation and not refund me, despite them breaking their own delivery contract. I would completely avoid this place, sketchy...
Read moreThis was Dec 2024. It was my first time purchasing a mattress and I figured going in person is a whole lot better than hassling online doing research. I saw the posted signage of possible discounts so I was curious of what I could find at Mattress Depot. When I walked into the store Gayle greeted me right away and had a friendly demeanor. She asked me what I was looking for and I admitted that I wasnât quite sure, but I was leaning towards getting a mattress at Costco for the sake of the price. Gayle intently listened and kindly explained the difference of quality between the brands offered at Costco and Mattress Depot. Furthermore, she explained the different firmnesses of mattresses that were available and had me try them out to figure out what I wanted. I immediately felt at ease and comfortable to ask questions because she is extremely knowledgable and took the time to explain concepts about materials and how it affected the price. After trying out a several mattresses I settled on one possibly. I still went to check the Costco nearby to see if the Casper mattress was worth it. It wasnât. I immediately came back to Gayle to get the mattress. I ended up going with a floor model mattress that I was able to get discounted so I was ecstatic! Best big girl purchase!!! 6 months later and I sleep well every night...
