I love starting off here. There has always been ample parking and friendly people. There is a restroom and a snack shack near the red caboose. The restroom is bare bones but convenient. We love picking up the trail here and cycling east. There is a park about 5 miles in with a food vendor, bathrooms, water fountain b-ball court, and a nice playground.
If you head west from this trail head, there are fewer people, the trail is much more remote and has some beautiful areas, but we don't feel as safe (there have been a few bad things that have happened so stay safe and avoid going alone). There is also a stinky water treatment plant that you'll have to pass if going west but the bad smell doesn't last too long.
Keep an eye on the time and sunset. The trail is covered by trees in a lot of areas and it gets dark before the sun completely sets - then it feels creepy!
Remember to practice good trail etiquette whether you're walking, running, cycling,...
Read moreHead West from the Hiram trailhead for the most scenic route (mile markers increasing). This part of the Silver Comet Trail has few road crossings to interrupt your rhythm if you are bicycling. The trail goes overall (lightly) uphill on the way out for about 3 1/2 miles which means you want to pace yourself at the start. But the slight downhill on the way back is a nice ego boost. This is overall a gorgeous section of the trail featuring a high trestle, several tunnels and plenty of shaded riding for hot summer days. There is a water treatment facility somewhere around 1-2 miles from the trailhead that can be noticeable depending on the wind direction, but this is a minor thing when contrasted with the trail as a whole. I have been coming here for over 15 years and I look forward to the...
Read moreThis is a great parking area for the SCT. There are two parking lots on either side of the road and they are large enough to accommodate everyone on the weekends when it's busy. The only thing I didn't like was that there wasn't any bathrooms. Or at least there weren't on the side we parked on (train side). But it's a nice parking area right next to a small city park. Next time we may check out that park and the other parking area (other side of the road). Maybe there are...
