A museum truly for the general public. Visiting felt like entering a mini-Smithsonian (free admission) that’s emerging and under development. Of the people and for the people. During last summer’s visit we noticed that there was no gift shop, and no floor staff, other than at main desk. Only security guards. However, the guards don’t “hover” among visitors. Uncrowded, lots of time to read descriptions and view works up close. Features major artists living in or connected to Hawaii as well as student works of all ages. Well known and highly regarded local artisans in painting, sculpture, ceramics and textile design were featured. A separate room showcased Native Hawaiian artists and their works. Special exhibits such as Children’s Day flying carp “koi nobori” are also featured. Cleanliness of exhibition areas were uneven, especially in unused spaces. Great value. Casual, relaxing atmosphere. Photo (non-flash) encouraged. Attendants not hovering around you. On-street or municipal metered parking available nearby. Some public parking stalls available behind ʻIolani Palace. Easily accessible by bus. Unforgettable.

Hawaii State Art Museum When it comes to visual art, I am not the person who should give critiques. I’m the guy who likes those paintings of dogs playing poker. So, as a person who explores a different form of art, I had to look around with an open mind and open heart. What stands out to me is the art that is directly relevant to the islands. So many pieces and so many different mediums, this non-visual art guy could only look and see stories. As I looked at a piece, I created a story on my head. Then I would read the actual story written about it I find that I’m close about half the time. But that’s what art is about. It’s not about coming to the same interpretation as the artist, but about find your story through their art. I’m in conflict about this post, so I’ll say this... If you want to get out of Waikiki, and see something that isn’t corporate generated, come downtown Honolulu at noon. Visit HiSAM then do a walkabout and see how Honolulu runs. Yes, we have the chronics and idiots, but we also have some great places to see in the middle of a work day! It will the best day you could have on O’ahu!!!!

This museum is small & takes less than an hour to go through. It's free though, in a breathtaking historic building, featuring Hawaiian art. Everything from kapa cloths to digital artwork. The descriptions of the pieces are informative. While I wouldn't suggest making a special trip if you're a tourist, it's a lovely little day trip if you want to spend time doing something that won't take all day. There aren't a lot of people, less than a dozen on a Saturday. As stated on the website, no food or drinks, & security will ask you. The gallery is on the second floor. The first floor has a cafe & vending machines, so get a drink on the way out. Through the back is the small sculpture garden with half a dozen statues. No parking here. You'll need to use a parking garage nearby (whichever one you prefer-Ali'i on Alakea is the closest).

Very small art gallery. It's something you do after you've lived here for a few years and have done everything else on the island. The security guard confiscated my hydro flask, which was really annoying. As if I can't be trusted to not spill or something. Then he asked if I had any food in my very small purse that only holds a hydro flask. Really? What do you think I'm hiding in there? Do you think I'm going to pull out a sandwich and start chomping down while looking at art? Or are you afraid that I'll suddenly get a hankering for a protein bar and get a crumb on the floor? What about a cough drop... do you want to strip search me while you're at it just Incase I have a lolly in my pocket? Just asking people to not eat or drink should be sufficient. At least it's air conditioned and had bathrooms, and was free.

Capital Modern is a cool little art spot, it's two floors, but most of the action is on the second floor, where there are two galleries featuring some impressive local art. The pieces are unique, vibrant, and definitely worth a look if you're into the local art scene. The place is small, so 30 minutes is all you need to enjoy it. It's also free, which is always a nice bonus. There’s no parking at the gallery itself, but you can park across the street in a nearby plaza. If you’re in the area, it’s worth a quick stop, and I'll definitely check back if they have new exhibits.

Recommend going there on a Saturday as the parking will be easier. This small, wonderful art museum has very interesting more recent creations from Polynesian artists. I thoroughly enjoyed my hour stay. The staff was friendly and helpful. Don’t forget to check out the sculpture garden in the back. There are street metered parking out front at $3 per hour, but there was a one-hour limit. I do believe one hour should be enough to enjoy this museum.
