If you are a wife or significant other who is less than thrilled about accompanying your loved one on this trip, I highly recommend giving it a shot. You can definitely make a great day of it. Hopefully you will be pleasantly surprised at how fun it is! ;-)
My husband and I left for this all day fishing excursion before the sun was up. Coffee in hand, we headed to the most beautiful fishing boat. It was so clean, and the crew made us feel so comfortable.
First they checked our food bags for banana products (which we thought we did, but clearly not well) and confiscated a juice that contained banana. haha. Thank God they did, because, from the sounds of the radio talk from other boats and chatter on the dock upon return, it sounded like we had a pretty successful trip out compared to some other boats on the water that day.
I have to admit, I wasn't super excited to go fishing all day, but it was amazing! Once we were settled onboard, they let me nap in one of the cabins while the crew caught bait fish. My hubby was way too excited and caffeinated to sleep. ;-) Throughout the day, we saw whales, porpoises, dolphins, and fish of course. The boat was so clean and nice, and we had great music to enjoy. Plus, we got to see the beautiful view of the Oahu coast from the water. The crew members were fun to talk to. Also, I felt this rush of adrenaline every time we had a fish trailing us. So much anticipation after waiting great lengths of time for a fish...
When my husband was battling his first fish, it was too big and soon become 'the one that got away.' He caught his second fish, which was so exciting! It was an absolutely beautiful striped marlin. And I thought I would be sad about the head beating, but it was quick and discrete enough to not bother me.
Next, it was my turn. I thought I would need a lot of help, but I did great reeling it in. It was an arm workout, but they helped coach me and were patient when I wasn't great about guiding the line evenly. I was soooo proud of my wahoo, or 'ono' as they call it in Hawaii.
One of my favorite things was hanging out up top, sipping wine from my coffee cup with breathtaking views of the surroundings and a front row view of the action on deck. So peaceful!
We got back to the deck and took awesome pics for bragging rights. Then, they helped us get set up with having our striped marlin prepped to be wall mounted. We also got to take some yummy wahoo/'ono' filets with us, which we enjoyed eating for the remainder of our trip. My husband loved the experience and also bought a t-shirt from them.
Again, I highly recommend a day out with the Magic Sport...
Read moreI recently had a chance to fish on a charter for Tuna, Mahi, Marlin etc... in Honolulu recently
What a joke... lmao!
The crew was great the captain was OK but the whole thing was a shambles... plenty of Mahi mahi came on board, yellow fin tuna came on board, nothing else did, (I accept that, that's fishing) but "Oh Em Gee" they fish completely backwards IMO
All my fish were boat side before they had any of the other lines sorted, they missed gaff shots, we weren't allowed to keep the fish, we weren't allowed to hold the fish for a picture, no communication about ANY safety on board... If I didn't ask we wouldn't know where the life jackets were, there were 6 fishing on board 4 of who had never been on a boat in thier life, 3 who had never caught a fish in their life.
We went roughly 25-30 km off shore 8 hr fishing trip and slept for approx 6 1/2 hrs of it. (Because it was boring)
Not to mention, we were literally "surfing" down the waves... and the boat was 50ft. Swells were in excess of 2 metres and white capped, at one point we even dropped about 1 metre straight off a wave.
Now I have been fishing for well over 25 years, and have caught plenty of fish in my life time...
Most reviews on here I gather are first time fisher's, I am not... we went out in dangerous conditions, no safety briefing... the non fishers who came thought "this is how they fish"
Also a crew member was out on the "drink" the night before.

Read moreWe initially chose this charter because of their impressive Instagram feed. We—clearly—made a mistake. My party and I were convinced by the captain to purchase extra time for the charter to get to the west side of the island because, according to him, that’s where the fish were. We were trolling for 11 hours and did not bait a single fish. As a matter of a fact we did not see a single fish (I am not joking). No one in my party touched a rod for the whole 11 hours we were on the boat. We spent $1600 for an 11-hour boat ride (minus the fun facts you usually get on a tour). Once we got to the west side of the island that we had to spend $100 extra dollars on, we spent minimal time there and then had to turn around because we had no time. Maybe the worst part of the trip is that the captain spoke to us for a max of 3 minutes during the ride. He never updated us on why we weren’t catching, never offered some encouragement, and simply didn’t seem interested in providing anything other than a glorified tour of the island. Hindsight is 20/20, but I wouldn’t choose this charter again. The only redeeming factor is that the deck hands (Jay and Jake, I believe) were very pleasant and were clearly trying.
UPDATE: we were originally supposed to be booked with captain Darren, but when we arrived we were told he was out at a birthday party, so seems like we got the...
