This was a wonderful trip for both those experienced with snorkeling and novices. My family included both types, and everyone found the experience amazing. Instructions was good and we had an excellent guide in the water who was extremely knowledgeable about the turtles, fish and the reef ecosystem. The biggest fear was not seeing turtles, but we saw a bunch. More importantly for those considering this tour is that although the turtles don’t reside in Turtle Canyon, there are important biological reasons why they go there regularly. I read that there are more in the morning, and we were on the 9:30 trip, so things may be different in the afternoon, but they guarantee you will see a turtle. The “deep” water is only 30 feet and was crystal clear to the bottom. Some of the tour is over reef where the water is only 10 feet deep. There are also large numbers of fish, and many different types.

In addition to the guide, this family-owned business also had several other folks in the water. One was a lifeguard who followed the group in the water, another performing a taxi service who went with people who wanted to go back to the boat early. Speaking of which, don’t be concerned about the two hour time of the session, the dock is so close to turtle canyon that you will have a full hour in the water, which is definitely long enough to se everything and vibe with the turtles and fish.

There was no alcohol, but a variety of complimentary non-alcoholic beverages in cans as well as little packages of snacks (the sort of things you’d take with you to the park with small kids, but I found my granola bar hitting the spot after 45 minutes in the water).

Finally, parking (at least on a Saturday) was tough. The lot near the dock was full. If you continue around the marina towards the beach, there is free parking but aggressive signs state it’s only for people at the park and adjacent beach and people parking for the marina are subject to fine and tow. We parked there anyway as otherwise we would miss the tour, but if I had it to do over again I’d take the local trolley or Lyft.

  • Bring some cash; you’ll be feeling really happy afterwards and wanting to...

This was a new experience for me; it was definitely outside of my comfort zone and I'm glad we decided to go with Living Ocean Tours!

As a heads-up, depending on the waves, be prepared for a rocky boat ride. If you get seasick, this adventure is not for you!

Check-in was super easy. Would absolutely recommend that you choose the 9:30 AM reservation since the turtles are much more active in the morning.

If you're going on a weekday, there will be plenty of spots ($2/hour) in the parking lot across from the boat (Coral Kai, Slip B-1). There are signs with QR codes that lead you to the Park Mobile app (or web browser) to submit electronic payment.

There is a bathroom onboard the boat so no worries if you forgot to go before your snorkeling adventure. There are lots of complimentary snacks and beverages, too (plenty of ginger ale if you feel sick)!

Everyone on the crew was fantastic! I wanna give a shout-out to: • Anabelle (for giving a thorough rundown of the snorkeling equipment and what to expect during the whole experience) • Hailey J. (for helping me once I started to freak out because my brain wanted me to breathe through my nose and not my mouth) • Aaron (gave group #2, the newbies, a tutorial on how to use properly swim with pointed toes, arms by one's side, etc. Also helped me back to the boat once Hailey traveled with me to the halfway point) • David (regularly checked on me and other folks who decided to end the snorkeling a little early)

For the short period of time that I was in the water, it was incredible! There were so many fish swimming around and I was able to see the reef on the ocean floor. I just couldn't get my brain to adjust to breathing through my mouth. Otherwise, I'd highly recommend this experience because you'll 100% be in good hands! Massive thanks to the crew for taking care of us and making this such a...

I recently had the absolute pleasure of experiencing a sunset sail with Living Ocean Tours, and I can’t recommend it highly enough! From start to finish, this was hands-down one of the most fabulous adventures I’ve had in Honolulu. The team at Living Ocean Tours truly knows how to create an unforgettable experience. We boarded the “Coral Kai,” their spacious double-decker boat, and were immediately greeted by the friendliest crew imaginable. Their warmth and enthusiasm set the tone for the evening, making us feel right at home. As we cruised along the Waikiki coastline, the views were nothing short of breathtaking—Diamond Head glowing in the fading light, the golden sands of Waikiki Beach, and the sky transforming into a masterpiece of orange, pink, and purple hues as the sun dipped below the horizon. It was pure magic. What I loved most was how relaxed yet exciting the whole trip felt. The BYOB option was a fun touch—we brought along some drinks, and sipping them while watching the sunset felt like the epitome of island life. The boat itself was spotless and comfortable, with plenty of space to move around and soak in the scenery. The crew was attentive without being overbearing, sharing little tidbits about the area that made the experience even richer. Living Ocean Tours clearly has a passion for what they do, and it shows in every detail. This wasn’t just a boat ride—it was a front-row seat to Hawaii’s natural beauty, wrapped up in stellar service and good vibes. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this sunset sail is an absolute must. I’m already counting the days until I can book another trip with them—five stars all the way!
