The canal walk itself is gorgeous but I experienced problems getting there and while I was there.
First, it's pretty difficult to figure out how to actually get there. I used Google Maps to get there (which was probably my mistake) and it kept sending us in circles.
Second, we didn't see any parking garages nearby. We eventually drove to the White River State Park to park because I saw online that you could there to the canal from there. That parking garage is insanely confusing and we almost left before we even got there.
Then, we found that there are NO BATHROOMS anywhere along the canal. I guess maybe the museums have them but we got there right at 5pm and everything was closed. We walked at least a mile before I finally found a place to go. I was so frustrated after that experience that we just turned around and walked back to the car and left.
I'm honestly not sure I would go back. It's pretty but not so pretty that it's worth spending a bunch of time and money trying to actually get there. Plus, I was very upset about having to walk so far with a very full bladder. It's insane that they haven't put ANY public restroom nearby. I was ready to pay to use a restroom if I had to, maybe a restroom you need to pay to enter would be...
Read moreLocated Downtown. This is a fun exploration of walking the city of Indy through the 3 mile canal loop. This is also considered to be a romantic walk as well. There's many things to see like the different underpass murals, gondolas, paddle boats, kayaks, segways, bicycles, vendors selling drinks and ice cream novelties.
I've had a few walks here with my family. It is a very beautiful walk. Alongside the canal are mostly residential buildings. It is quiet most of the times. You will also find a USS Indianapolis Memorial as well.
No swimming allowed, however, there are designated "Float days" you can take your tube and float on the water.
If you are ever visiting Indy, I highly recommend stopping by and staying at the...
Read moreThis is a 3-mile loop. While we didn't go around the lake, we went towards downtown that circles around and comes back. On the way, there are rental paddle boats available as well as two gondolas available for rent. They have specific times for group tours and at other times you rent the whole gondola (with the guide who rows and sings) and you can bring up to ten people including yourself.
We parked at the paid parking lot at White River parking lot and did about 2 miles of the loop. Felt pretty safe with a decent number of people walking and jogging. There's also a splash pad for kids near downtown as well as a memorial for USS Indianapolis. If you have a free evening in Indy, this is definitely...
