What a neat little gem here in the small town of Jefferson! There is a lot of history in this town, and a lot of Civil War history. We really enjoyed browsing through the 2 stories of artifacts. The other 2 stories were closed for renovations. They are also putting in an elevator. Lots of history about the earlier settlers of the town. Many of these families donated family belongings to the museum. It was in the Federal Courthouse and post office building built in 1888. Outside, in the back of the museum, is a building built especially for an inherited model railroad, HO scale, layout. They inherited this layout from the R.D. Moses family from Fort Worth. They had to hire a company to dismantle it to relocate it to Jefferson. It had to be in storage until they completed the building. That was very interesting. This is a "must see" when you visit this quaint, historic, beautiful little town...
Read moreThe workers are all SO sweet and helpful. The museum is very clean. There are stairs and a small elevator. There is a lot to see, I'd plan about 1.5 to 2 hours to see it all, 1 hr if you rush through it without reading the plaques and examining everything. There are so many handmade clothing items and quilts and food items and historically significant furniture pieces and hand-bound books. I was surprised some items weren't displayed at the Smithsonian because of the significance and age. The train room is a major highlight for children. I have never seen a display so intricate, all made by hand (no touching allowed). The trains run, and there's a tiny kite that blows in the breeze (electricity and wire). The detail is amazing to see. A must-see on a trip through historic Jefferson. The photos I added are less than half of...
Read moreMy husband really enjoys going to museums and learning about the history. My style is more art than history which they had a good mix of at this historical museum. I will say a few displays that had clothing laid out on a bed or chair was a little freaky. They looked almost as if the persons body evaporated on the spot. They did a good job bringing in items that covered the history of Jefferson. Art depicting nursing mothers is important to me, since so many women seem to be pushed away from this natural...
