Next stop on our Alaskan Cruise was the port of Juneau, a major tourist city in Alaska. Lots of things to see and do here, we want to come back and stay for a week or longer so we can take more of the sights in.
Once docked at the port, it was easy to see why they stop here. So much to do within walking distance, shopping, restaurants, tours, bars, etc. it's just like a Bahama port, just in the north.
The date was late April and the weather was awesome as it was mid 50s and bright sun, we were so lucky. Didn't even have to wear the thick layers, just a light coat. Today we planned on taking a sea plane tour over the glaciers (I will post another review of that business) and grab some food and take in the sights while just walking around.
While walking around, we had noticed that several shops and stores were still closed for the season, most of them with signs saying "Will Open May 1st". Talking to the locals, that's when all the cruise ships get busy and the tourist season is officially full swing. The views of the landscape from the streets of town were breathtaking...the mountains loom high and makes you feel so small in this little valley area of land and water.
Juneau is actually land locked....it's surrounded by water on one side and glaciers on the other. You can drive lots of miles in several directions but that all end somewhere. The only way into Juneau is by boat or plane they told me. Everything he is imported so add that cost to the tourist upcharge and things are more expensive than stateside.
If you don't stop anywhere else, make sure you at least walk down the Red Dog Saloon....it's like stepping back in time to the gold rush era and on the wall, they claim to have a gun that belonged to Wyatt Earp and left behind. One can only imagine the stories this...

Read moreJuneau Cruise Ship Terminal area is conveniently located near walking distance of the downtown Juneau. We were given maps, brochures and coupons in the ship when our ship was docked at the terminal. This was also available at the Visitors Center.
There were many jewelery and wood carving shops. Many restaurants, eateries, galleries and shops were lined up leading to the downtown area. There are historical buildings, museums and churches within walking distance from the ship Terminal area.
The whole downtown area was full of pedestrians or tourists from the cruise ships. We bought the souvenirs and mementos from the gift shops. This is Alaska’s Capital city and interestingly, it can be accessed by sea or air only.
This is surrounded by steep mountains and pure wilderness. It looks beautiful all around. You can see an aerial tram going up the mountain. You need good walking shoes to walk around the city, sometimes uphill. We also took a free shuttle bus to see the town and then walked all...
