We are an MTB family of 5. I had two teen riders and my husband with me, myself being the only experienced gravity rider. I will note our family has a bmx background, and our kids race on the NICA circuit which was beneficial in allowing us to have an amazing time on the mountain. Read on to learn why…
Huge Note on the Trail Ratings: The Bike Park’s green trails are absolutely NOT green trails by any standard. For true beginners with minimal skill, riding this park is a sure fire way to have a bad time. But with even a bit of single track experience, I think the average rider can figure it out, even if it means hot laps on the greens and taking the gondola back down. (You can’t take all greens to the bottom.) Crescent, their easiest green trail, is in the beginner-blue trail realm, with only some sections that qualify as green. The fact that some of the available lines are loose knocks it out of the green category. Payday and Cool Neatness are also better categorized as Blue, with some sections definitely treading into Black territory based on some of the switchback’s steep gradients combined with loose rocks. The loose rocks in the turns and on some straights on these trails are avoidable and/or manageable for the experienced rider, but for a beginner who doesn’t yet choose the best lines and is busy white knuckling their brakes, it can be sketchy for sure. As for their blue trails on the upper part of the mountain (chair 3 zone), Jackass, El Burro Loco and Carnage Asada (which is new and not yet on the map), they are all definitely better described as black diamonds for the average rider in terms of overall grade, technicality and steepness. There are steep and loose switchbacks, unavoidable rock gardens, and the presence of optional/rollable features like jumps and some smallish natural drops. The rest of their blacks are better seen as double blacks, the red portions (of which are well marked on the maps) have huge pro features for those riders who carry excellent health insurance policies.
As for the the trails past the point of no return that take you to the bottom, they are longer but markedly less intense blues compared to those at the top of the mountain. The lower blue flow trails like lower Jackass and Corkscrew are trails you can just slip into your zen state and bomb to the bottom. But Be sure to take Picnic Rock to stop for an amazing view (pictured). High Life, Low Life, Pepsi Can and Wildcat, all had natural features and smaller jumps that can get your wheels off the ground if you want. There’s also a pretty cool little table jump series and a hip somewhere among these. (You can’t miss ‘em ) The lower blue tech trails are fantastic for someone looking for some added challenge in their descent. Again, keep in mind, these are better rated as black and they can bite unexpectedly.
Bike shop: The resort bike shop was helpful and cut us a pretty amazing deal on some work that my daughter’s bike unexpectedly needed. Bike was done overnight and back to her first thing in the morning.
Route of the Hiawatha Trail: we took a recovery day between bike park days to ride the 15 mile Hiawatha trail. Highlight was hand feeding wild chipmunks. 10/10 would recommend for an easy day. Just be aware, bike etiquette does not exist here.
Food: Yokes grocery store. We cooked.
Accommodations: We stayed in a resort condo for our first 3 nights and my daughter and I grabbed a private studio to stay an extra day for hot laps on the mountain a 4th night. rooms are clean and get the job done, though we would have preferred a 2nd bathroom. The condo easily slept 6. A 7th could sleep on the couch and the master had room for a cot or sleeping bag or two for those of you wanting to bring a big crew and save $.
Water park: We absolutely took advantage of the water park admission, hitting the hot tubs, lazy River and flow rider after the day’s activities. We even booked a private lesson for the flow rider on our last day -something I wish I did earlier in our stay.
Overall our stay was amazing and we will...
Read moreBEWARE!!! This place is unsafe, unmonitored, not-family friendly or even friendly to say the least. This past Saturday 12/09/23 my family booked a stay to enjoy an early birthday celebration and hit the waterpark with our ONE year old. Hoping to enjoy a fun day turned into a disaster! We were in the very kitty area for toddlers and my son 1-year old, was struck in the head TWICE with a chair from another guests' child who was at least over 5+ years old! There was no lifeguard on duty, no parent supervising this other child, no accountability was held for this boys action. Instead of getting to speak with anyone we ended up leaving the park due to the unsafe conditions and since the kid was still wondering around we didn't want to risk our son being harmed or in danger again with no help from anyone on property. I called the front desk at 7:30am the next morning to report the incident and the agent was concerned and let me know her manager would be giving me a call back. I never received a call back instead when I went to check out I was able to be in contact with the manager. I would say meet, but she didn't even introduce herself just jumped right into defense mode like I was about to ask for something in return when I just wanted to share my experience and feel heard and acknowledged since the whole incident at the water park wasn't. She had no empathy, no kind words of sorrow for how traumatizing this experience is. Just brushed it off and told us they were separate entities and they couldn't do anything. There was nothing friendly about her, but I must add the front desk agent I spoke with all through check in and check out deserves a metal for providing her best hospitality to me. She in my eyes was more qualified to be in the leadership position than the current manager, she was SO kind and apologetic. I left the resort as a first time parent feeling defeated, underserved, overlooked, with a bad taste in my mouth about a place I couldn't wait to treat my family to only to have a poor experience and to not be heard from anyone. It is Monday now and I still have not heard from ANYONE! I will be sharing my experience in hope's it never happiness again, it is not fair or hospitable for anyone to get this down right poor treatment.
To add- our balcony sliding door was left open all night since we checked in. We didn't notice this until the next morning when we actually went out to the balcony and wondered why it was so cold in the morning. Our sliding door was never properly closed to add the cherry on top of a terrible stay. The customer service was absolutely poor, I would not waste a dime for this kind of...
Read moreWe have been to Silver Mountain Resort a few times. We normally have a pretty good experience, nothing drastically wrong that required a review. Well, after our experience recently, a review was needed so other families can be prepared.
First night we were there, at 1030 (after quiet hours started), our neighbors came into their room next to us like elephants. It didn't stop there. They were obviously intoxicated. After hearing screams like someone was being attacked, my husband and I were on edge. The screams then turned into hysterical laughing from a female and yelling from a man. My husband pounded on the wall and the noise stopped. Fast forward 15-20 minutes. The yelling and laughing happened again. This continued for 2 hours until I couldn't take it anymore. My husband went down to the desk at 0100 to complain. The lady was very nice and said that they would go knock on the door and ask them to quiet down.
My husband went to the office the next morning to see how Silver Mountain was going to make it right for us. The lady was very apologetic and said it wasn't their only complaint for the night. However, she said "unfortunately, there isn't anything we can do. Those guests are friends of the owner so we can't do anything. We are really sorry." They didn't have any rooms left like the one we had reserved, but they did move us to another room. The TV did not work in that room, but we were just happy that we were not next to the "special guests" anymore.
Our kids loved the water park. But I will say, the lifeguards were on their phones constantly. The flow rider instructor would put a kid on a boogie board and then go sit down on the rocks and be on her phone. The life guards at the top of the slides were on their phones every time I went up to slide. That is a safety issue and there's no excuse for life guards being on their phones.
The kitchen at the water park was busting out food quickly, but I watched the cooks in the back eating food. I don't know if they were eating their own food or someone else's, but it looked bad. Another worker brought in McDonald's and as she was ringing people up for their food, she would eat some fries and take bites of her burger. I was less than impressed with the employees at...
