I was an employee of the Geneva Lake Museum over the summer, but that should not take away from the praise and high regard I have for the museum. While on the backend of the museum, we could be a bit chaotic, the museum is very well layed out, clean, just a wonderful time.
Everyone who works at the museum is very friendly. I highly recommend getting a docent to lead a tour. When I was docenting, I found that more people would tell us that this was the best museum experience they have had than if they did not have a docent.
It is fantastic to take children to; they are allowed to touch most things, go into the exhibits, ring bells, and just really get immersed in the history. If course, adults can do all of the things that children are allowed to do!
Visiting this museum has to be number one on any list of things to do in Lake Geneva. Look at the pictures I have posted to get a feel...
Read moreThis is a lot of museum for the low admission fee. There are loads of artifacts and you can walk right up to them, which makes it more interesting, although people with little kids had to monitor them around the old china. The setups showing homes through the last couple of centuries were particularly interesting, although the old businesses were my favorite. Some displays glorified lavish fortunes and the strange things millionaires bought, but the museum is clear-eyed about the Chicago gangsters that spent lots of time visiting around the 1930s and 1940s. I look forward to them someday expanding the little display about a nearby majority-Black community and the local tribes' experience, and i would have enjoyed a little more content about how D&D came about. And the scary-looking hair curling machine in the ladies' room--yikes! Overall, it's...
Read moreI expected it to be a different experience. Gladly, this museum was beyond my expectations! It is really well organized and everything is well identified. There are tags that indicate year of the room you are in, information about the artifacts you are looking at, historical details about objects or rooms, and much more. The person who received us gave us a short bit knowledgeable introduction to what we would find. She was also very knowledgeable about other aspects of the city itself that were no part of the museum. Kids get to play a search game. They can do it by themselves or someone from the museum accompanies them to help them find the answers, too. It was a great experience! We were all pleasantly surprised and impressed by how neat and how interesting the history of...
