Tried this place for the first time and I don't have a clue what the other reviewers are saying about this place. The only folks that would appreciate such a lackluster showing have never had the traditional prepped foods. Big Yikes.
I'm never eating here again.
I got three rolls, one of them was the house specialty. Literally named after the restaurant. The first one I tried was a standard spicy salmon roll, they put so much spicy mayo on top of the roll that the grease from their sauce (which incidentally should not occur in that sauce) that the underside of the roll when you picked it up left an orange greasy residue on the container.
The second roll I tried was named after the restaurant. This one was so drenched in tempura flakes that you couldn't even see the rolls underneath. Additionally I don't know what they did to cause this, but you could taste the propane from the grill in the food. Sushi IMHO should have absolutely no grill gas flavor. The only way that kind of thing escaped the chef's notice is if he has coronavirus and can't taste it.
The third roll I tried was titled 'Son of God' this one should have infuriated me, but the ingredients were just so well chosen based on the context I had to give them props and try it. Honestly, this one was the worst. Underneath the salmon that was on top, they had plastered so much miracle whip that I had to scrape it off the top of the roll. You couldn't taste anything but mayo. Irritatingly, the roll underneath was perfectly fine. It tasted reasonable, subtle. Even more frustrating is that the role looked great before they added the mayo and the salmon on top. It's like the traditional sushi chef they have makes the food and then whatever American owner is in charge slathers it with any Americanized ingredients that he has on hand...
Read moreI was in Lake Geneva for a couple of days and found myself in the mood for sushi. Sabai Sabai was one of the highest rated restaurants in Lake Geneva, so we gave it a try.
Ordered: shrimp tempura (appetizer), spicy tuna roll, California roll, and Godzilla roll, with mango sticky rice for dessert.
The shrimp tempura had a light, crisp coating - better than most other versions I've had. They were petite and delightful. It's tough to avoid oil flavoring the food in an unpleasant way, but the flavorful ponzu sauce was great.
The sushi was excellent, as good as I've ever had so far from the freshness of a coastal city.
The plating of the sticky rice was interesting, A shared plate with two tiny forks featuring a lump of rice and a delicately sliced segment of fresh mango in a pool of sweetened milk sauce. It wasn't bad, but it wouldn't be something I would order again. I've had much better.
The restaurant is in a historic manor building. Essentially, a big old house. As such, the layout and seating is trying to maximize minimal space. It was a Friday evening and the place was hopping. It felt cramped, and I wasn't comfortable being so close to other diners' tables - but if the last four years have taught me anything, it's that capitalism doesn't leave room for comfort or safety.
Perhaps the most pleasant part of the experience was the host, who (if I were to guess) was an owner or manager. She was friendly and genuinely appreciated our business.
Parking is a situation that locals probably do just fine with, but being from out of town, we ended up in a paid lot which was a pain in the butt and about $3 more expensive than it needed to be, given the time of year and demand.

Read moreFamily night dinner with four adults & a toddler. We loved every aspect of Sabai Sabai. We chose to eat outside, which is dog friendly, a huge plus.
The food was outstanding!! My husband & son chose the Drunken Noodles, beef & chicken. All dishes can be fixed at 5 levels of heat, 5 as the highest. My husband ordered a 3 which was mild for him, 5 would have been perfect.
I had the Sabai Sabai dish made with glass noodles, shrimp & chicken. My heritage is Filipino, Hawaiian (and Polish) & the Pacific Islanders call the noodles "long rice". The dish was too spicy for me due to a medical problem in my throat & forgot to give my request for the lowest heat level.
We had two orders of fried rice for the table, pork & chicken, that was mouth watering delicious! I was able to mix my protein with the fried rice & it was fabulicious! Very satisfying!
My daughter in-law ordered the Pad Thai with tender chicken. She told us it was very scrumptious.
My two year old granddaughter had a variety of vegetables, chicken & wide noodles in a light sauce. I'm unsure of the name of her dish. Her fork & spoon just wasn't doing the trick, her little fingers managed to get the veggies, noodles & fried rice into her mouth much quicker. She brought some noodles back home but all the "goodies", broccoli, carrots & chicken were eaten at the restaurant.
Prices are very reasonable, big scrumptious servings. Fresh, fresh, fresh. Wide variety of drinks. I had Rosè that was chilled & refreshing.
This is definitely at the top...
