The Honokowai Beach Park and its beach is great for families with young children
Two hours before and after low tide the is like a protected lagoon (great for children 1 to 6). Two hours before and after high tide it is great for children 4 to 9 for it is relatively safe for them to play in the sand and breaking waves. By entering the water on the north end of the park, you can snorkel safely between the two reefs that run for more than 100 yards in front of the park. To see bigger fish, you can go beyond the 2nd reef.
The barbeques, tables, and benches under the trees are great for meals and snacks as you can watch in the shade the children play in the sand and water in front of you. Within 20 to 80 yards from the park there are 5 very popular takeouts that you can get good food to eat at the tables in the park.
The beach park has playground equipment and swings for young children and lots of grassy space to play sports - soccer, football, softball, and catch. .

Read moreThis is one of my favorite places on the westside to take my dog to play fetch as there is a large grassy area as well as my toddler nephew as there is a nice playground and beach park. There are public restrooms, BBQs, a few tables by the playground, and ample shade under trees. Great park for hosting birthday parties. The water isn't the best, but it's still beautiful and swim able and depending on the tide can have some really beautiful small sea shells! Across the street is a coffee shop, the Farmers market, a cheaper latin liquor store for basic drinks and snacks as well as basic Mexican food, a cute boutique selling handmade Maui knick knax, and a massage place etc. This park is across the street from the basic shops in Honokawaii and is a go to for families and dogs. ABc store is only one block away and Times only two short blocks, in the other direction Kahana is maybe a 15 minute walk (4 minute drive) and Napilli only a 30 minute walk ( minute drive). Lahaina is a ten minute drive...
Read moreExcellent beach for young children because of the alternating sand and rock bars that break the waves and prevent any rip tides. You can walk on top of the first rock bar and the first bar has the softest sand in all of Maui that ranges from waist high to neck high (I'm 5'5). Just watch out for urchins and coral on the following rock bars. You don't want to step on either: to preserve the coral and to preserve your feet! Even several sand bars out it is still relatively shallow, less than 8' deep. Turtles come here daily, sometimes past the first rock bar. There are, well, were a lot of colorful fish before the tourist season post-pandemic lockdown. Please don't fish here. There is not much to catch and that's why there are so many urchins. Urchins each the algae so when there are fewer fish eating algae there are more for the urchins. There are also fewer fish that eat the...
