Kebabian's is much more than a rug store and the staff are so passionate about the product and delivering the best customer experience. It's really an art gallery dedicated to rugs and a really fun place to shop!
What I appreciate most about Kebabian's and think is crucial to the company's sustained success and ability to deliver such tremendous value to their customers is the rich and long history of this 5th generation, family-owned business established in 1882.
The present owner John Kebabian has been working directly with weavers in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkey and China (often traveling to these regions) for decades. These relationships and this knowledge and experience have made it possible for John and his team to consistently offer the most amazing selection of incredibly beautiful and extremely high quality rug creations. They have also yielded a wealth of product and market knowledge that John and his team are very excited to be able to share with customers, and that after 142 years of history I figure is 2nd to none in the industry.
As first time buyers of high-quality imported rugs some 10-11 years ago, my wife Angel and I were tremendously appreciative of the friendly, kind and enthusiastic professionalism, knowledge and 100% customer-oriented focus John Kebabian and his team at Kebabian's brought to our thoroughly enjoyable and successful first rug buying experience.
They actually let us take our first rug home to live with over the weekend so that we could feel comfortable it was right for our new home. I think that extra effort was key to us making our decision to buy.
Since then we have never hesitated to recommend Kebabian's and in fact just did to some university friends of 44 years who reported back that "everyone at Kebabian's was wonderful! Peggy Kebabian, John's wife, listened to our ideas and presented us with a selection of rugs to choose from. Their inventory was amazing. They showed us rugs in our price range that we never thought we would find." Our friends were just over at the house for a UConn gathering this past weekend and reiterated just how pleased they were with their beautiful new rug...
Read moreAlthough Kebabian's has been selling rugs for over a hundred years, it wasn't until 1990 that I bought my first carpet from them. When I entered the store it was a little like a small piece of central Asia right in the middle of downtown New Haven, just a few blocks from Yale. I have visited the great carpet bazaars in Istanbul, Teheran, and Delhi and I knew at once that this was the real deal. The nineteenth century interior had carpets piled to the rafters and included hand-woven, vegetable-dyed rugs from all over the middle east, central Asia, and India.
If you are looking for inexpensive, machine-made rugs, Kebabian's is not the place and you might want to go somewhere else. If you are looking for hand-woven village and tribal rugs with an incredible range of sizes and motifs from all over central Asia, Kebabian's has an unmatched selection and a staff that works directly with the weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This means the provenance is genuine and absolutely impeccable and the quality is superior. You will know exactly who made these rugs and when and where they were made. I have never had the feeling that I was being overcharged and have always felt that I was treated with genuine sincerity and honesty.
Since my first visit I have bought numerous rugs from Kebabian's. They are stunning, hand-made works of art that bring an incredible sense of warmth and comfort to my home. The Kebabian family has been running the business in this same location for over a hundred years and I wouldn't even consider buying a carpet from anyone else. You can get a real sense of the inventory just by going to the website. It has fresh photos of current inventory rather than the stock photos you might see on other websites. If you shop around, and take a little time to learn more about Persian carpets, you will find that Kebabian's is an incredible resource in New Haven and I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Read moreToday I picked up 3 rugs that I left to be cleaned at Kebabian's. I always take my rugs to Kebabian's because their work is excellent. Before a customer leaves, sales associate Craig and John Kebabian, the owner, or his son Josh, will look carefully at each rug, checking it for spots, wear along the edges and especially the fringes. I really appreciate this because their suggestions are always with the rug in mind. I've had fringes replaced and repaired there, always by hand by their experts Marcy and Lal, (the rugs looked so much better after!), edges repaired (again sewn by hand), and fringes cut evenly so they are straight (sometimes they wear unevenly because of foot traffic). Kebabian's is a top-rate store, and I trust them implicitly. Most of the Oriental rugs I have in my home, I purchased from Kebabian's, way back to when the elder Mr. Kebabian, John's father, was still there . John is very knowledgeable. He listens carefully to my wants and needs and Craig will show me a great variety of carpets until I've found one I truly like. The store has an enormous selection of rugs; surely a customer would be hard pressed not to find a beauty to his/her eye! Craig has a wonderful sense of humor. I love going to the store because the entire staff, John, Josh, Craig, Marcy and Lal, is so friendly and if they have a few free moments, will chat with you about rugs, camels and even elephants! This is indeed the best oriental rug store! I took my friend from Montreal there and she...
