I'm sorry to say I did not have a good experience at Chaplin's because I did not have one at all.
I called and booked a shave over the phone. however, when I arrived at my appointment I was informed by the barber that my appointment was not actually written down as a shave and she wouldn't have time to do it.
It was annoying to travel to this place expecting a relaxing, refreshing experience only to be turned away, but that's not what makes this a 1 star review.
She offered to move me to a later time which was nice, but during the interaction she blamed me for booking the wrong appointment and was condescending, explaining what a straight razor shave is as though I had never heard of it before. I left feeling like I had made her angry and inconvenienced her.
Simply put: I won't return, but if you decide to come here be VERY explicit with instructions to the person booking the appointment because they won't take time to clarify the service you're...
Read moreNeeded a haircut and well trying out a new shop is always nerve racking for me. I walk by this place regularly so thought I'd give it a shot. Was lucky and there was no wait - I appreciated that instead of rushing me into a chair, I was politely asked if I want to see the prices and make sure that I want a haircut (FYI the prices are totally reasonable if not cheaper than other spots I've been to). This lack of pressure felt atypical, though I had already decided I was getting it cut. I've been hating my hair lately and Berta thoughtfully talked me through what I want to change and offered some tips. She methodically cut my hair, taking it a bit at a time and prevented me from ever getting that dreadful oh no it's too short fear that comes with trying a new shop. Great cut, beard trim, hair wash, blowdry, hot towel, etc. A wonderful experience and even though it was my first time, felt like I had been coming here for ages and will most definitely...
Read moreI moved to NYC about six months ago and have struggled to find the right place for a cut. Too expensive, too cheap/quick, too trendy, too old school, not a quality cut, etc. Chaplin’s is the answer that I was looking for. It’s a nice cross between a barber shop and salon. It’s very clean, well run, and has a nice casual vibe. The folks running it are very nice as well. Katya cut my hair and gave me a very careful and high quality cut. She was very receptive to what I described and asked for and took the time to check in with me along the way to make sure I was happy with everything. After the cut, I got a hair wash and quick head message (very nice!). It didn’t take too long, but was not at all rushed. The price was just right as well. I’m happy to have found this spot and will...
