On Hockey:: I recommend to only play hockey in this league if you have tons of experience. The league is not for beginners (even the lowest level is all ringers) and it's not a league if you're looking for fun. The Adult Learn to Play Hockey is awesome and has amazing coaches but you'll need to go somewhere else to play as City Ice Pavilion has no bridge from Learn to Play to a league play.
City Ice does not mitigate the play level for the league so if you are highly skilled and need to be big shot then you can play in D4. There's plenty of ringer inflation there so you'll fit right in. City Ice's advice to teams that have lesser skill.....dump your weak players and get ringers. What's the point of having different levels? What's the point of having Adult Learn to Play Hockey if you have nowhere to play after that? Idk, but I do know this has been dealt with in other leagues around the city so it is fixable.
City Ice might be cheaper but you won't get better when you play against better players if you're constantly being stripped of the puck before you take a single stride. If you're new, or older, or looking for fun it's better to pay a little more to skate with similar skilled players. You can find better run leagues at Chelsea and Steadman's D9. There's also Hard Pass that offers a ton of great options for travel tournaments, scrimmages, and community. During the winter there's...
Read moreMay 2024: This place has recently become ridiculously hostile to students. In addition to shortening the classes by 30 minutes, skaters are forbidden from practicing any backward skills on the ice despite the majority of the curriculum being composed of them. We are also forbidden from using the bench area because they are “reserved” for hockey players who use the rink at a completely separate time. I really feel bad for the rink staff for having to enforce these rules. I can only attribute these lazy rules to the management team’s lack of management skills and concern for program quality.
I had a really great experience in 2023 but it got so much worse this year. I will definitely consider other facilities for learning to skate.
Update: Sep 2024 They finally changed the class structure. Kudos to the people who listened to the feedback and made the changes. My experience has been much improved in this...
Read moreI’ve been taking Adult Learn to Skate classes since fall 2023. Levels 1-3. I’ve really enjoyed my time skating here and looked forward to Sunday classes.
Unfortunately since the director change, I’ve had a very poor experience. Here’s her changes for anyone looking to take adult classes:
• Reduced class time by 30m. • Increased pricing per class across all levels. • Maybe? Increased class sizes. It feels very crowded during lessons. Moreso than pre-leadership change.
After class, you are welcome to use public skate to practice. Unfortunately it’s very difficult to skate with the public. It’s crowded and while city ice did expand the roped off inner circle for students, it’s not large enough to accommodate multiple classes of students.
This has led to members of the public accosting students and serious injuries from lack of space.
I’m disappointed by...
