This is a fabulous find in Queens. I came by in the late afternoon on a weekday and found so many wonderful unique pieces. Be mindful that you do have to dig through bins in order to find anything. There is no sense of order, everything is pretty much thrown into bins and then bought out to the main room. The clothing selection is very good and they do offer a variety of size options. If your on a tight budget this is a great way to supplement your wardrobe with some great outfit choices at an economical value.
Also make sure to bring large tote bags with you, since they place your belongings in clear trash bags for you to take when you checkout. Another pro is that they do accept credit cards. Everyday the merchandise changes so you just don't know what you're going to see when you go there.Everything sells for about $1.79 ! Per pound. Exceptional value
Update,* I came on 11/3/18 a Saturday morning and boy what a difference from the weekday evening crowd. If you do not like large crowds be mindful of this. Typically when I come in after work you can walk in and and find some great pieces.
On the weekend, it's like black Friday with free giveaways. Apparently there is a system and structure among the folks who come here often. Every hour they allow another subset of people to come in before the mad dash...I kid you not I now understrand why they have signs that read do not run. Apparently duri g there prime time you wait to go in on an hourly basis. Real estate at the front of the line is crazy, prople will push you if you allow even a small gap in the line.
I saw first hand how people literally run in and grab handfuls of clothes, fill up there carts and sort through them later. Clearly they have a system that works for them. After the initial madness of about 20 minutes it started to calm down a bit. Granted there were more empty bins but it was better after everyone came in and grabbed their goods. Did I find items today? I did was it worth the wait and the hassle? I may hold off on coming back on a weekend. It was a bit too crazy for my taste. While I did notice some high end designer names double check your items to ensure authenticity since the ones I found were clearly fake. Goodwill does have an online store if your look I g for genuine designer items without the hassle of looking online.
I wanted to write an updated review for those of you considering coming here. Some of the awesome brands that I have found here have been primarily Coach, Michael Kors, Italian leather goods, leather jackets, vests, skirts, and blazers. Some of the items will need some cleanup and care but if you have the time I say go for it. Just be prepared and bring plastic gloves to keep your hands clean, bring lots of extra large tote bags, some hand sanitizer when your done, and finally a friend with a car or car service. Trust me uber will be...
Read moreI don’t come here often but over the years of visiting them, I’ve learned a few things.
Can’t beat the thrift by the pound price. From mall brands to occasional score of higher valued items to the lucky vintage/trendy stuff..depends on the day.
You can get a cart but you gotta come early, most of the carts will be hogged by daily shoppers (yes the ladies with the sacks). But hey it’s New York, we are all just hustling. Everyone gets to play here.
The employees can be a little over the top at times with the yelling and scolding, but they don’t typically mean any harm. They are dealing with America’s rejects all day - and we have tonnes of them! Still a little mutual respect is highly desired in any setting. Treat an adult like an adult, it goes a long way. There is at times no need to ruin a shopper’s mood or day by making a scene of them. Just approach them and say ‘hey, we can’t have this push cart on the aisle, it blocks mobility. Feel free to park it by the side.’ As opposed to ‘HEYYYYY, STOP. You can’t bring that there. It’s not allowed. Move it RIGHT NOW.’ It’s just unnerving for anyone to have that kind of privilege of nasty speech these days.
I can never find the other shoe! Why is it that only the good shoes are missing their significant other?! Maybe they could clear out the bins with the older shoe inventory more often. There’s 3-4 shoe bins that are kept just to throw the new rejects on top of. You end up having to dig constantly in those, perhaps creating even more non pairs in the process. Not an efficient way to make merchandise move.
The wait for new bins can take a long while at times and you end up waiting and being scolded at that often. Again the ‘not allowed’ lingo that the employees use often could be reviewed. You feel like cattle being herded. No one in todays day and age wants to be spoken to that way.
I’ve never stayed open to close before but safe to say they roll out new bins about 6+ times per day.
I do notice that the new bins get hauled away quite fast sometimes. Since the daily shopping ladies amass loads of items first and then sort on the sides, they will put back what they don’t want after a while and you can go sort then, but often the staff is out already to get the bins back inside. A little bit of missed opportunity shopping, I would say.
Overall, it’s a great place to find bargain deals and the employees are trying their best and just learning from each other. So their way to handle their business and how they treat their paying customers is coming from somewhere. I will say that there are more respectful shoppers than any boisterous problematic ones, and it will be nice to see more nicer treatment in future.
We are all NYC residents. We get it. It’s rough out here, but it’s...
Read moreAs of July 29, 2021 when I came into the store on a Thursday around noon I was met with a group of people waiting to enter and check out the bins. I noticed that the layout was slightly different. When I first entered the store there were two racks with brand name jackets hanging. These items were priced at 9.99. some of the labels on the rack were Ralph Lauren Polo, and gap to a name a few. A few feet away the better name brand merchandise was behind a counter with varying prices. They had an awesome Ralph Lauren cream scarf for $24.99. For that price I'll go to Macys where I can use a coupon. It seems that while this used to be a thrifters paradise I can't say it's worth the trek over anymore. If you are looking for clothing I think it's a great bargain at $2.19 per pound for clothes and $2.29 for non textile items. But if your looking for those awesome score items it may be a hit or miss.
The store clearly is now sorting there better merchandise to sell at a higher price point. While I love the thrill of the chase I can't say that I am finding it here. Honestly for anyone reading this looking for brand names go to your local thrift store or even shop goodwill online. To spend $10 on a used item, that was donated to the store is a bit much for me for the treatment that is provided in this venue. The staff were cordial and professional but the whole concept of having people line up, and scouting to not touch the bins multiple times, asking people not to move around rubbed me the wrong way. I noticed the difference when I went over a year ago and people would line up on one side (ps. there is absolutely no social distancing here for anyone that is curious) and run to the bins and stuff everything in these makeshift potato sacks. That has not changed. The shopping carts of the OG's of this place line the walls, when the staff announce that people can begin shopping they continue to rummage and empty bins in seconds. The staff try to keep the clients in check but it just feels wrong on so many levels. I felt like cattle, being herded from one place to another. That is only way...
